Willie Nelson Bluesman?

Post by Dave Boothroyd »

What do you think about Willie Nelson's "Milk Cow Blues Album"?
I heard a track on the radio last week- it was "Funny how Time Slips Away" with Willy and a very Soul styled singer doing a duet.
There seemed to me to be a tremendous contrast between the two styles- the agitated and elaborate soul style and Willy's VERY laid back singing.
Actually I liked it a lot, because it seems to me that a lot of his songs are about smiling through the pain, and the contrast seemed to underline the message.

I always liked his "Rainy Day Blues". There's a version of it on a cassette called "For Jimmy Day Fans Only" that is so incredibly laid back. (Sorry, I don't know who sells the cassette.) It's just Willie and Jimmy and it sounds like it might be a living room recording.

And then there's "Night Life" which, while it isn't a classic 12 bar, is a standard among blues bands that lean in the jazzy direction. Image I think that if Willie hadn't sold a bunch of songs in Nashville, he would have ended up on the shelf next to Mose Allison.
