To DaynaWills: Western Music Show

Post by Tim Rowley »

Just did a 3-day show here in Michigan over Labor Day weekend which was a tribute to the silver screen cowboys. I can't recall every performer on the show, but some of them were Les Gilliam, Roy "Dusty" Rogers Jr, Rex Allen Jr, Joe Paul Nichols, Johnny Western, Belinda Gail, Jean Prescott, and The Sons of Tennessee. I played steel for all of them except Johnny Western and the Sons of Tennessee. Most of them were kind enough to send work tapes and/or charts a few weeks ahead of time, thanks to the efforts of our mutual friend Les Gilliam, and the show went great! These performers are exemplary human beings, which is a heck of a lot more than you can say for 50% of the talent coming out of Nashville these days. Les Gilliam said to BE SURE to tell you hello and he thinks you're great! Tim R.

Hi,
Just got home from Vegas. (see Luke Wills Birthday in Off Topic)
Yes, I think Les Gilliam is one great singer and a fine gentleman. He saved me from making a fool of myself at the Steel Guitar Convention in Tulsa a couple of years ago. I started fretting (pardon the pun) over the fact that they kept playing ballads. I was afraid they'd lose their crowd if the didn't "pick it up". He explained to me that the steel and the player was best represented by playing ballads. "oh".
Tell him I said Howdy. And send me his e mail address.
I just adore Jean Prescott. She is one of the nicest ladies you'll ever meet. She gave me her spot on Larry Scott's radio show a few years ago. I came boppin' into Big Balls in Ft Worth, wasn't on the show, but she asked Larry to give me her spot.
Joe Paul is a new friend. Has a good CD available.
The Western and Western Swing people are the salt of the earth. Glad you had a good time at the show.

Dayna, it will take me awhile to come up with Les Gilliam's E-mail address because I don't have it, but I will do my best. Les is supposed to be mailing me a bunch of Bob Wills material (also Johnnie Lee Wills, Luke Wills, and Billy Jack too!) so hopefully he will include his E-mail address also.

Hey, great post about Luke Wills' birthday party. I didn't realize Bro. Luther J. was still with us. I hope he is able to be around for many years yet to come. According to the old pictures I have seen, Luke was a professional smiler. On one live recording I have, Bob introduced him by saying "You ladies with the babies whimpering out there, let 'em whimper. This is a home folks show. We got my awkward brother Luke comin' up here. You think those babies are whimpering now, you wanna hear 'em CRY?!" Then there is the usual banter about how Luke has really shed the weight lately and has "fell away now to a half a ton", etc. and how his favorite song is Old Shep and so on. Then of course Luke sings Little Star of Heaven, Estrellita de Cielo and tears the house down. As he swings into the last chorus, Bob yells "Don't leave lady, he'll be through in a minute!" Truly the best of the best. What a legacy. Tim R.
