Anybody heard the new album "chores of enchantment"? Great music! And a fantasic Steel on some songs.
Reminds me of the OP8-project Howe Gelb and Lisa Germano made two or three years ago.

BTW, how is the PSG "scene" in Europe? When I was stationed in the Phillipines, in the early seventies, every club in town (Olangapo) (1,000's of clubs)had a house band, in any and all styles of music, who almost always could totally nail any cover of a song on the radio, except for a slight accent often heard in the vocals.
One major-league group there was called
The Vibratos, and they beat out the "Beatlemania" concept by about ten years, at least, playing back to back sets of Beatles tunes impeccably, and even had the costumes to go with the era.
They were so good at it it was scary, considering the ultimate poor state of the Beatles' live performance when they quit touring.
I was just curious about the music scene over there.

Rich, it's funny you should mention Europe and Beatle cover bands. Ethan Reilly who used to play steel with Jerry Inman's Palomino riders in North hollywood in the mid 1970's, has a German based Beatles-Beach boys concept group that has the vocals and playing nailed. They're called 'the Boys'
Martin, I quite like Giant Sand and the OP8-project, I haven't got a Giant Sand CD in years though.
Have you heard Calexico though?, that's the rhythm section of Giant Sand and they do great stuff that's like Sergio Leone westerns soundtracks.

shure I know Calexico! They're fantastic! There will be a big festival in Berlin in May because of the 10th anniversary of City Slang records and Calexico will be performing together with the Flaming Lips, Lambchop, Yo La Tengo and some others. The concert of the year, if you ask me!
I didn't like the last few Giant Sand CD's; they were a bit directionless. But "chores..." is the best Gelb has done by now.

the Phillipines are as far away from Europe as Europe is from America and they doesn't belong to Europe. I have no idea about the music/PSG scene over there. In Europe the PSG is growing, though. Last month there was the first PSG fest in the Netherlands (Steeldays 2000) and I guess it won't be the last!

In the early fifties I used to play on the Armed Forces Network for two different groups. At that time they had a 100,000 watt AM station. This was in Munich. We would casually reherse a few minutes before air time. I'm sure we must have been rotten.
There was a small guest house that featured live country music in the evening. In my mind it's still there but in reality, probably not. Old men still have their dreams.
