TNN/CMT to go under MTV Control

Post by Jack Stoner »

Here's an item from an on-line newspaper.

"Viacom Inc., which is buying CBS Corp. for about $43 billion, said it will fold CBS's Nashville Network and Country Music Television cable-TV channels into its MTV Networks group."

Looks like any hope for more traditional country music on those two channels will go down the drain with the MTV management.

Not so fast with the wailing and tearing your clothing, Jack. This might be a good thing, since the people at MTV are music types, generally younger I understand, and could bring a renewed respect for trad. country back to the network.

And MTV's VH-1 network has come up with some excellent documentaries on various musical topics on a consistent basis. So things could be an improvement.

Actually, an improvement in the musical content of TNN would be quite easy. Just do about anything!! Image

Of course, this could just be my own naivete', or perhaps my own stupidete'. Image

Some of the BEST players I work with in Austin playing traditional country, western swing and rockabilly are in their 20's and early 30's. And the biggest fan base is definitely in the age group we would consider the "MTV generation." So I personally would hold off the predictions of doom and gloom for right now.

I hope they don't mess with my fishin' shows though!

I agree with Herb, it's sure a lot better than the CBS corporate television execs programming the channel, as they don't have a clue (pretty obvious when you see them presenting something related to country muisc in made-for-tv movies and then like).

Like them or not, MTV and VH1 are well programmed and presented for their target audiences. I think we'll see better and more varied programming on CMT soon.

It will certainly be a net positive if we get rid of the “70’s rock is today’s country” mindset. The key phrase, as John pointed out is “target audience”. Enough of the failed attempt at being all things to all people.

I've seen two Hank Senior (!!!) videos on the M2 channel, which is an MTV spinoff.
This is NOT a country music station... mostly alternative rock and the like.
So I think this could be a very good thing!

How could it be any worse? Tnn has become The Nitwit Network. Only thing, I guess we will not get to see the Waltons anymore.

I like VH1. I agree that putting TNN in the hands of a music video network could be a good thing. TNN carries some really lame stuff.

I think we shouldn't be so eager to dismiss change, music is evolving!

One thing is for sure, it can't get any worse than it already is. Going off the air completely would be an inprovement.
