Movin' On
I was in the gym the other day and they had the radio turned to a heavy rock station. I find most of this music rather annoying but I was stunned when I recognized a heavey metal version of "Movin' On". You know "Big eight wheel a movin' down the track". Unbelievable!!

Hey Smokey,
Have you heard any of the recent, rather beat-your-head-against-the-wall rocked up versions of "Cotton Eyed Joe" or "Whiskey in the Jar"??
I can't tell you who the group(s) are that have re-recorded them, but I suspect the current pop obsession with anything remotely Celtic in flavour has something to do with it. You have that same startled moment when you realize what the tune is.
It's kinda bizzare.

Going in "the other direction", The Cache Valley Drifters bluegrass group covered Cream's "White Room" superbly. I've always had a thing about rerecording a great song. If I can't improve on it, leave it be. Improving on classic tunes is a tough row to hoe. Especially when you don't even bother to try.
To me it's like stealing the glory of a great song, for the sake of a familiar, warm and fuzzy hook. For no end other than the sake of one's own gain.
