This was not unusual at all after Bud Isaacs did what he did. Literally hundreds of players used all kinds of devices to get "that" sound.

And the Fender multi necks were very adaptable to this. Some were very well done. Yet others were extremely crude.

Seems everyone jest had to have that sound.

Carl, that makes sense. Since those Stringmasters were new at that time (and who knew that they would become a vintage instrument) it would be like modifying any modern guitar.

If I wanted to add or change something on, let's say a Melobar, nobody would lift an eyebrow....well, maybe Ted

That one actually looks like one of the better conversions I've seen. Kind of Bigsby-esque changer system.

Could Shot have done this? I've never seen any of his legendary conversions.

Well OK, if there were no PSGs and you could buy a Stringmaster in any music store, and I heard "Slowly" for the first time, I probably would have done the mod.

At the time it might have seemed like a good idea, like refinishing that old Strat...

If it means you can get one for a fraction of the Vintage price and play it, I say thank God for bodgers.
That Guitar could be back from the dead in no time. If I had it I'd even restore the "pedal" mechanism- after all that is vintage too, and it's part of its history- and music history too.
If I found an old Bentley that had been raced and modified to suit 1930s racing- I'd be delighted - I would not be calling it rude names and accusing the long-gone owner of sacrilege.
Chill out men - it's not like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa- It's an old guitar. It's for playing not collecting, investing in or worshipping!

Shot Jackson did "Fender Conversions" in the mid '50s before "Sho-Bud."
A couple of my North Alabama pickin' friends took their Stringmasters to Nashville to have it done.

I bet that guitar sounded great.
It was probably mechnically bad, but that large wooden body would have an excellent sound.

I could believe anything about those cheap people at CBS Fender. They cut my commision
and took it from 10% to 2% and increased my sales budget sky high. They told me I would make more money that way. They somehow felt
everybody should be playing a Fender. This was the plan. They gave me the use of a company car,It was a leftover. This was in 1965,the car was left over from 1932 but low mileage.

There were 8 million people in this area,that was what the BPI showed "buying power index".

I showed them in spite of being so dammed cheap I could do the job.At the end this was
the results.

7 Million people owned Fender guitars etc
600.000 were undecided
The rest were unemployed and had to settle for a GIBSON

Money means nothing to me,,CBS taught me that. Join the club of the not rich and famous,but at least you are good looking.

Very few if any look as good as Gene Jones my Cowboy Hero.

Did you ever get the feeling that posting on here is a lost cause?? I do,so I'm going to get lost for the cause.

That guitar was a special design prototype
by LF and was sent to some young cowboy in
Oklahoma. One of the Jones boys I think.

Joey....it did sound great when beginning the first set, but it deteriorated mechanically throughout the job until by the last set it resembled an abandoned house with curtains blowing out of broken windows.

It had to be rebuilt after every 4-hour job!

Jody, I'm gona come clean...it wasn't my guitar. When all of my equipment was stolen from the Diamond
Ballroom, Merl Lindsay had loaned it to me until I could get mine replaced!

Jim Murphy was playing for Merl about that time after I went to work at the Diamond, so he may know something about the history of that pedal-stringmaster.
