Best steeler (Nick)names?

Post by Mark Bunster »

Didn’t see anything on this before:

What are your favorite steeler names or nicknames?

I’ll start with Pee Wee Charles and Sneaky Pete Kleinow. :D

The man who helped me get started playing steel guitar was named William H. Stonecipher, but he went by "Stoney", so his name was William H. "Stoney" Stonecipher. He was called Stoney because his last name was Stonecipher. Stoney used to play steel at Dollywood and played Emmons guitars.

BJ Cole, when he played with the semi satirical yet very traditional sounding English band Hank Wangford went by the name of Manley Footwear. I saw them play in 1982 when I was over there bumming around.

Captain TRIPS was the moniker that Jerry Garcia often went by. There is a connection there…..

Johnny "Dumplin'" Cox

I used to joke with the band I played with that my stage name would be Les Moore. Well, maybe I was joking.

ok, as much as I think this was ridiculous, and it was VERY long ago, I played a few times with a really good NJ band, and although I never actually became a member the singer introduced me several times [at his own accord} as "bullet bob", and maybe a few times as "mister bob"... A little later on, in a well known NJ club band I was with for 3 years I started getting called "bronco bob" early on by my band mates for reasons unknown, as I was an Italian NJ kid, and had never even been on a horse in my life. We all wore cowboy hats in those days. Never really liked that dumb name but it stuck for years and years afterward, and lots of people just called me "bronco" for decades afterward. Many people that followed the band never even called me bob.. just bronco... ugh... It was a different time, and I am not sure that sort of thing is happening much although I see marty stuart still uses nick names for his band guys at his shows,... I think Buck Owens kind of started that trend, but I suppose it could have been around before his time as well... bob
