Autumn Leaves plus huge Joaquin Feature

Post by Ethan Shaw »

The new episode of Raising the Bar debuts this Friday, 10/3@3pm CT, featuring an hour-long segment on one of the greatest steel guitarists that ever lived, Joaquin Murphy. You can hear it on SteelRadio, at steelradio.org. Here's the live recording of Autumn Leaves for the show. I hope y'all enjoy it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAyZTCps2A0
I want to give a shout-out to Andy Volk, who with John McGann put out a great book called “Joaquin Murphy classic western swing steel guitar solos”. Not only does it have transcriptions of some of Joaquin’s great solos, but Andy also has a great bio in the book, which definitely helped me in filling in some of the info for this feature. Mike Neer also has an invaluable resource on his youtube channel where he has compiled the recordings of the solos that are in the book. Herb Steiner and Lee Jeffriess have both told me a lot of first-hand information about Joaquin, and Chris Clem has done us all a great service by posting a ton of Joaquin’s music on his youtube channel. He’s where I got a lot of the recordings I’m playing for you, and if you want to hear more Joaquin, go to Chris’s great youtube channel. A big thank you to all of you who are helping to keep Joaquin’s legacy alive!

I really enjoyed that Ethan, you sounded great ... I had a Fender 400 for five minutes when I was a kid, but always have had a soft spot for these guitars.

What tuning are you using here?

That was the stuff! Wonderful vintage instrument, great playing and such a lovely fat tone. It is crazy how far the modern pedal steel sound has strayed from this. It is almost a different instrument. I am gonna have to try to catch that show.

Something different from you, nicely done, I enjoyed that. Not only is the Fender cool looking, it sounds good too.

Thanks y'all! I'm glad you enjoyed listening to it. I love the tone of those, too! So much so that that's now the only pedal steel I own. I appreciate y'all listening!

And, Dale, it's A6. I have the same basic changes as standard C6, but down a minor third.
