Roger Rettig

Post by Barry Yasika »

I've been thinking about Roger lately and noticed he hasn’t been posting as much. I reach out from time to time through emails just to say hi, but I don’t want to overstep or become a bother. Still, I can’t help but wonder how he’s been doing. His kidney issues have always been tough, but he never let them get in the way—until recently, it seems. Roger has long been a respected figure in the steel guitar world, admired not just for his talent but for the insight and generosity he brings to the community. If anyone has any updates, I’d truly appreciate it. Hoping he's doing okay.

I chatted with Roger today and he’s doing fine. he admitted to being somewhat intimidated by the forum’s new look and hasn’t logged on for a couple months but said he will try again soon.

I believe he’s more active in some of the steel groups on facebook

It's nice of you all to enquire about my well-being: thank you, and thanks to Barry for starting it.

As I'm no longer active as a pro musician, I find myself hesitating to participate as I once did. I've now gone for six months without changing a knee-lever (a personal record :) ), so there's been no local 'news' to share on the Forum.

Scott's right: even a change of type-face has me flustered, so the new streamlined SGF, while it's doubtless better, is a minefield for this old Luddite.

I've had a couple of health issues, one just last Friday when, upon ending my dialysis treatment, a check of my 'vitals' showed a pulse of 150 bpm. Under their rules, an ambulance ride to the ER is mandatory and I spent several hours there. It would appear that the dialysis team had opted to take too much fluid with the inevitable result. I'm a bit shaky on my legs these days, and my essential tremors provide a unique and distinctive vibrato to my playing. In the not-too-distant future, I have an offer of yet another 'Always, Patsy Cline'; it remains to be seen if I'll be up to the task, but I'm hoping to do that one. It's only just up the road in Ft Myers.

I tinker with my Steel, but find myself drawn to picking up my Super 400 in preference.

So, no complaints here, really. I count myself fortunate to have played music for my living - in my head, I still do. :) :)

PS: We're now in a world without Brian Wilson. That's a salutary loss! If anyone ever left the earth better than he found it, it was Brian. What a musical giant he was. I'm off to listen to 'Disney Girls' and 'Surf's Up'!!

Nice to see you back on line, Roger. You have had a nice career as a performing musician and your posts are always interesting. I hope you are able to do the Patsy show. I played that once in Greene, NY and it was fun. I hope you are enjoying your new guitar.

I once heard Gordon Lightfoot say in an interview, “Motion is the potion.” He meant that we should keep moving forward—focus on what we can do, and work on those things. It struck me as a pretty good cliché.
I’m really glad to hear you’re doing well. I've missed reading your posts.

I do apologize ti everyone for my lack of response to your kind posts, but for some reason, I no longer get email notifications from the SGF. I'm not sure how to set that up, either. It used to happen automatically.

All is well, thank you, although my first pro gig in five years (last night), while enjoyable, was thoroughly exhausting! This caper is no joke at my age. No wonder McCartney is packing it in.

I will write more soon: I miss you all.

Roger, very glad to hear you're doing OK. And definitely - congratulations on your gig. Yes, they do get tougher the older we get.

phpBB 3.3 defaults to only front index page notifications, and not email notifications. I assume the intent is to de-stress the email server, which can be an issue on a really busy forum. But the defaults are easy to change; here's the thread on making these changes - viewtopic.php?t=406965
