Aluminum Legs?

Post by Andy DePaule »

Used to be a fellow at a place called Red Barn sold or made the Aluminum steel guitar Legs.
Also Gary Sills sold them, but they no longer do.
Does anyone know of someone else making or selling them now?

The sources seem to have all dried up Andy. We have a discussion going over on the pedal steel board concerning issues with the chrome plate adhesion. I don't know if these are isolated instances or whether it has anything to do with the scarcity of chrome over alloy legs.

MSA must have a source, their guitars have chrome plated Aluminum legs.
I think the future lays in carbon fiber, even thou I am unsure that it must be carbon... more traditional "glass" could suffice as there is not "that" much stress on them.

TOP lightness would be the most desirable in PSGs... and bottom heaviness, for optimal stance.... but then, we don't want to make ANYTHING heavier... and light tone wood is still something I have to test (Eg: Paulownia).

If I'm not mistaken (I may Be!)...doesn't GFI and Justice use aluminum legs in their steels?
Justice has their S10 series "entry" model that appears to use them.

I think those legs are specific to the guitar on which they are used. FWIW, I once owned a Cougar that had basic mill finished aluminum legs, but they didn't have the same threads nor the adjustability of the mic stand style legs that are most common.

I don't really know of a maker, supplier that does aluminum legs with the standard 1/2-13 thread, telescoping legs, clutches etc. in a universal, fit all product currently. Those suppliers that furnished plated aluminum legs seem to have stopped production/modifications.

I echo the comments of some others here to just build them using the aluminum tube with the other standard parts and polish to a mirror finish. More care and maintenance likely required but a friendlier weight and no plating issues.

I would think someone would build aluminum legs with an anodized coating. Black, Gold, Blue or Green legs would be pretty sexy on a guitar, Matching the guitars color.

I put Aluminum inserts into aluminum tubing, When I built a guitar in 1970, Threaded inserts and put steel inserts in, To screw into guitar. If I had just put threaded inserts in the bottom of the back legs, With adjustment screws, They would have allowed adjusting for out of level floors.

Thanks to all who responded. I'll try to find them out there someplace.
Hi Wayne. I did check your web site and got the impression you had stopped working on that project for the time being?
The steel I'm building needs to be light because of my advancing age and backache.
Will try to attach some photos.
Best wishes,
Andy

This seems like a great solution. I like a matte finish, less maintenance.

Who/where is a supplier of aluminum tubing? I don't recall seeing any in the "big-box stores...HD, Lowe's, etc."?
Probably an AOL search would provide some information. Same suppliers might provide channel stock for aluminum pedal boards...

WE are working on them again Andy. Almost All the problems have been worked out. Just trying now to get around the tariff situation. Also, on that front we may have found a solution. If you need them in a hurry, try Ron at Justice. I do not know if he sells parts direct however, it does not hurt to ask Also we have one of his S-10s here and those legs are really, really light
thanks

Many metal suppliers/distribution/mfgs. can furnish round aluminum tubing Tom. I see several types and sizes at McMaster Carr online.

All mill finish, or course, as basic raw material needing some degree of final finish or alternate finish.

One must know which alloy grade of aluminum, such as 2024, 6061 etc, the proper I.D. for installing threaded slugs without splitting, and have the tooling for the clutch threads if they were going to diy these like the original mic stand style product.

I don't see a reason why it couldn't be done successfully by someone in the biz at a reasonable cost.

Ideas besides legendary polishing are worth considering as pointed out by several of our members. Anodizing, matte finish, shrink wrap like I did etc.

Aluminum might even be a good idea for people like Atlas that build mic stands as well if the light weight is deemed sturdy enough. Only problems I can see would be threads in the softer metal being prone to damage with abuse.

Also, Wayne appears to be working on something so we'll see how that goes.
