Never before heard live shows CreamoftheCrop Roy Wiggins Billy Bowman Paul Franklin Jimmy Day Wally Murphy

Post by George Piburn »

I found a box of cassettes from 1986 with a whole bunch of the Greatest players all alive and playing really good.
Back then Audio Audience mic recording was encouraged.
These are over 39 year old cassettes, never played back until today. Amazing sound quality for an interview mic.
I converted them to MP3 for easy playback.

Most of what I found is pedal players, But hidden in all of that are a few Non Pedal Gems which I will share with everyone.

Cream of the Crop, Roy Wiggins, Billy Bowman, Paul Franklin w/Brent Mason Band, Jimmy Day, Wally Murphy

ImageAre those pedal steel guitar hotshots actually playing 6 and 8 string lap steels or playing on the c6 neck of their 10, 12 and 13 string pedal steel? I’ve never heard bebop lines like those played on a non-pedal guitar at that speed and complexity. Seems impossible.

Cream of the Crap ? -- More Songs Added - Check it out !

Post by George Piburn »

For those who may not know, the mid 80's was a peak time in pedal steel history, lots of makers and players.
The 4 players were the top flight Ateam all known for their pedal playing.

They had gone to the Mall and had some Cheezy shirts made up with those fuzzy block letters iron on. "Cream of the Crap"

Their plan was to show everyone that super equipment is not needed to play some burning C6 solos.
Jeff was playing a student model, Randy had a 2X4 steel, Buddy if memory recalls had a 10 string Panda, and Paul had an aluminum frypan.

The antics included all of the players holding Buddy up side legs up completely off the ground and him playing one of the solos on this jamout.
