Replacement PU for Stage One PSG

Post by Tom Rhodes »

Good morning all:
Am kicking the idea around about replacing (or up grading) the pickup on my Stage One. Am soliciting pro's and con's of this project. (ie difficulty of replacing, recommended brands, etc)
Any suggestions/input very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Tom I was going to do the same thing. I wanted to replace the humbucker with a single coil. Maybe ask Doug Earnest what will fit and go from there?

Steeltronics makes a replacement single-coil for the Stage One. If you want a humbucker, you could ask him if any of his humbucker designs could be adapted. Thanks to his 3D printing process, he can do custom designs. (He made me an 11 string version of his SW10/SW12 humbucker design for a small upcharge, and I love it!)

If there's a humbucker in there now, here's my suggestion... Take it out, send it to a rewinder, [there are several that will do this work], and have them rewire it with 3 taps.. One for full humbucker, one to isolate the front coil, one to isolate the rear coil.. Same pickup as original, but now with 3 distinctly different sounds.. I have been doing it for years... I can recommend Tom Brantley pickup service -he can do this mod, as can any other rewinder, and they typically charge the same or close to a standard rewind fee, which is cheaper than a new pickup... You install a 3 way switch on or under the guitar, and this simple mod really does transform the guitar... bob
