Interesting steel Lanois played, looks like a modified Sho-Bud with just two pedals and only four pull rod tuners at the end plate. His high volume soft picking technique definitely stands out from more standard picks grip and string plucks. It works for the kind of ambient compositions and improvisations he favours but wouldn't work as well for other styles.

Great post, Daniel is one of a kind, taking the pedal steel into another musical world, with great taste, feel and respect for the old folk songs and hymns.
I wonder if anyone on the forum recognises the [guitar] pedals on top of the Korg Delay. I think the small one might be a EHX Freeze pedal, but the other one puzzles me.
