It's Jack Kittel, and the player was forum member Frank Rogers. Here's a thread where Frank tells the story behind it - viewtopic.php?t=290071
To me, this is the quintessential version, and the steel playing is perfect.

Guess I'm off topic here but:
A guitar player I play with occasionally does this song. Why, I don't know. That was the first time I heard it.
I agree with someone in another Psycho thread that says it's one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Very disturbing.

If you read that thread, you'll see that it's definitely Frank Rogers from the forum, and I believe he is (or at least was) in Michigan.Paul Wade wrote: 10 May 2025 8:11 am Dave

Re: Steel player for Jack Kittel??
Yes, it is a pretty edgy murder ballad. But country music is full of murder ballads. How about this one from Paycheck? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJsMaCoqkkgn - I do this one whenever I can get away with it. Life can get dark sometimes, and for me, good music tends to reflect aspects of real life. On this one, the combination of Johnny's delivery and great steel from Lloyd makes the song for me.Jerry Overstreet wrote: 10 May 2025 8:29 am Guess I'm off topic here but:
