Frying Pan Tapper

Post by Chris Templeton »

When I worked for Bobbe seymour, in the mid-later 80's, he had gotten a hold of the molds for the limited edition frying pans, from Sho~Bud that Jerry Byrd made. He made less than 10 illegal one's. I was given one and made a fretboard, a slanted bridge, tuners and put in a Lawrence Pickup.
I got a call, in San Francisco, a little while later, to do a session for Novato Frank on a song that had a posthumous track of Quicksilver Messenger Service's, John Cipollina playing on it. and recorded my laptop Tapper on it and this is the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jydrk6ZkU00.
I went to visit Dan Tyack in Washington and in the airport, I dropped it and the fretboard came off.
Having studied with Jerry and knowing what he has done for the steel guitar, I didn't feel good about Bobbe making those pans, so I threw it out.

Did it look like this? This one is presently on Reverb https://reverb.com/item/85498026-sho-bu ... sue-1980-s
I'd like to have one but I think what they did to Jerry was dishonest and really sucks :(

That looks like one, Gary.
Same knobs and pickup.
He also had a bunch of those white, Sho~Bud fretboards.
