12 string single coil pickup replacement recommendations

Post by Dan Rollans »

Hello fellow players. I know this subject may have been visited several times before, but I would appreciate fresh input. I play a 1992 Mullen pre Royal Precision
12 Zane Beck tuning that I bought new in ‘92. Great guitar. It has the stock single coil pickup with a great tone but single coil noise. I tried an E66 when I first got the guitar. It killed the tone. I went back to the single coil.
Lately I have been pondering changing pickups to combat the noise. I have a 10 string BMI with a Dr. Gene Turner Power Boost pickup that is outstanding. I would love to have one for my 12 string, but none to be found.
Question: Which pickup would be recommended to eliminate noise but still have great tone. Opinions on the LXR-16, Alumatone, or others.
Better yet, anyone have a Turner Power Boost 12 string narrow mount they would part with?
Thank you,
Dan Rollans @ Steelers Choice

Thank you fellows for the input. Great video from Mickey. I’m leaning towards the XR-16. Any other suggestions or tips?
Thank you

Revisiting this thread. Did you ever choose a pickup? I’m also looking.

Yes, I went with the XR-16. Love the Humbucker side. Single coil side no so much. The humbucker side comes as close to the factory installed Mullen pre Royal Precision single coil as I could find. Main thing is no noise. Plenty of lows, miss and highs. Good separation.

I had a Mullen Royal Precision SD-12 with the stock single coil. It buzzed so bad in some venues that the guitar was unusable. Others in the band with single coils had similar issues.

I put in an XR-16 and a switch to change it from humbucker to single coil. I actually thought that it sounded as good or slightly better in single coil mode than stock Mullen, which was a great sounding pickup.

I even have a noise gate pedal on my pedal board in case I encounter a venue where the single coil mode buzzes a little. A lot of buzz and I switch to humbucker.

Steeltronics SW12. Keeps the single coil tone, no hum.
