Robert has really done some miles on the road. He always seems to be playing somewhere all year long.
His right and left hands are phenomenal. When I was his guitar tech in 2002, he asked me to show him some country. He payed great, though his tuning doesn't easily get some E9th stuff, Strumming Sacred Steel tunings is a big part of the call and response at their services.

Re: Robert Randolph's new song "Sinner"
That's pretty cool stuff he plays. Never seen him live but always wanted to, maybe someday if he's around here. When I first heard him playing, I thought he was a slide guitar player using a guitar like Trucks or Allman. It blew my mind when I saw him doing all that on a pedal steel guitar. I suppose he's been down that path now for a while but I'm all for the change in way he plays his steel. Awesome sound to me, but I'm not sure I''d use a steel guitar that way myself. I think I'd just play slide but to each his own. Awesome song, great player who should be in the hall of fame if he isn't already. Thanks for posting this thread.

Lots of late 60's, early 70's Soul in his sound. Good stuff.

Robert's style is considered by many as Jam band music, but when I first met him, he hadn't heard jam bands like the Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic etc.
In 2002 he played the first year of the Bonnaroo festival, in Manchester Tennessee. I'm sure he saw his potential for that kind of audience as his market.

As Scotty always said, all styles and nationalities are welcome in traditional steel guitar world. We should be proud and happy that he's brought many new people into lap steel and pedal steel playing and giving it a boost.
It took some courage to play outside of his church and he took some flack for that.
You go Robert!

While I only occasionally listen to him.
In my opinion, Robert Randolph is the first relevant PSG pro-player after Paul Franklin... meaning with a credible and successful new style in Pro-quality.
He might be the one, our grand children may look back to, if the instrument makes it into those generations.
... J-D.
