Open D string gauges

Post by Steven Pearce »

Hello all,
Theres a lot of posts about what gauge to use for open D tuning, 22 1/2” scale.
Resonator, lap steel, pretty much anything you play horizontal, the best for me:
18P plain, not wound, 20 or 22P 28 38 48 62
For my sound, these gauges have great tension, they don’t get baggy and you can really
dig in and the strings just resonate. Maybe too heavy for some, they just work for me.
Gotta buy them individually, about $10.00 online, but hey, I’m worth it 😁
Different brands will sound different, but the gauges make it work.

Thanks,
Steve

I use John Pearse Hawaiian slide strings (for Weissenborn). Sound great with a mag soundhole pickup.
The 3120’s come pretty close to those gauges
