I had a Key9 pedal for a while, and it doesn't have an acceptable acoustic piano sound. I found the pedal useless.

Yes, I listened to an audio demo of the unit and decided that it isn't what I'm looking for. I had a Steel Rider for several years a while back. So, I guess I got a little spoiled with realistic piano sounds.

Unfortunately for string pickers, midi is the only avenue to obtain a realistic piano sound....and even then it has to be polyphonic and no latency.

I have one of the Sonuus G2M guitar controllers to control a midi module and although the piano sound is pretty good, it's monophonic and too slow to be very usable. Barely able to keep up with Behind Closed Doors at that tempo.

I guess something like the Roland G series pickups and controller is what one needs unless you can find another Steelrider rig.

There is a Boss SY something or other synth pedal that some say works pretty good, but no experience here. Might check those out.

I have a Boss SY-1. I've found 2 or 3 organ sounds that I like and use often. I found a couple of string effects on it that I like but haven't figured out a way make the transition from note to note that sounds like a bow rather than picking. I even tried bare fingers and it still sounds more like picking than bowing.

It doesn’t even have an unacceptable acoustic piano sound. It’s an ‘electric piano’ emulator - Rhodes, Wurli, etc - with some organ, mellotron, and other non-acoustic piano tones.

I use an Alesis Midiverb4, Telonics midi controler..good Pianos and Organ patches.. lots of other PSG useable sounds.

Larry, thanx for the info but, it looks like I'd have to go back to carrying another rack case around and I'm not playing out that mach any more.I guess I'll just wait and hope somebody comes out with what I'm looking for in something more like a stomp box.

Boss DM800 with GK5 hex pickup. Check out youtube videos, the acoustic piano sounds are unreal.

Here's a thread about Dale Watson's steel player Don Pawlak getting a piano sound with just a drumstick. I've seen him do it here in Austin back in the day. Unfortunately none of the videos still work but maybe with some digging around.
