Midi Steel

Post by Jerry Dragon »

I recently purchased a used Roland Ready Fender Strat. It has the built in GK3 pickup. I bought a used Roland GR55 and it came with the pickup. I was wondering what I would do with it. I was doing some research on the pedal and found someone here who put a GK3 pickup on his PSG. I had never given it any thought because it is only a 6 string pickup. The gent who posted here said he just put it under the the 6 high strings. I'm thinking I can do that. One question, on the guitar the pickup is fairly close to the strings, on the PSG should I put something under it to get it closer to the strings? Wish me luck and thanks all.

You'll want to get as close to the bridge as possible as well as close to the strings. Tracking is greatly improved if you are not picking up harmonics.

Hi,

If you are playing E9th, I would place it under strings 3-8. Depending on the string spacing of the pickup you may have to angle the pickup slightly to get the center of the poles aligned with the strings.

Enjoy,

I played (and still do on occasion) a lot of MIDI steel, but I use software instead of an actual MIDI pickup. In my opinion it works fantastic but for live playing you are tied to your laptop. I invested a lot of money in sounds/plugins and really had a blast with it. I still use it for recording.

I used to play a Roland GR-50 back in the day and it was cool but left a lot to be desired in terms of tracking.

I have a number of midi setups- including Photon, IVL, etc. Fun stuff for sure- much better for pads, etc to avoid false triggers and they do use hex pickups. All that being said- MidiGuitar 2 is an app on the iPad and when combined w a midi mixer such as AUM you can do amazing things. An iRig is required to get the signal from the guitar to the iPad.

Buddy plays it like an expert keyboardist, me, I mostly sounded like a bad one. Great for pads.
