Always Something There (To Remind Me)

Post by Mike Neer »

Let me just start off by saying F Alzheimer’s disease. My heart goes out to anyone who has been faced with the decline of a loved one because of this insideous disease.

When I was a kid back in the days of console stereos, we had one parked on the other side of my bedroom wall, where I would often find my mother sitting and rocking on the floor while listening to LPs. Feliciano! was one of the records she would listen to in addition to Dionne Warwick and others. I fell in love with those gorgeous sounds but I didn’t realize then how important they would be to me later.

Mom has Alzheimer’s dementia and I thought of this song and recorded this version today. Might not mean much to anyone else but I felt great catharsis recording it.

Beautiful tune by Bacharach and David. Just so nice composition and arrangement. Always loved it. You did a bang up job on this tune, Mike.

My heart goes out to you and your Mom suffering from this cruel disease. I have a family member who suffers from some memory issues but thankfully does not have Alzheimer's. Still, I can only imagine what both of you have to endure. Best to you.

Sorry to hear about your mom, Mike. My mom was a singer, and when she got terminally ill 38 years ago, she had music going on constantly. It was cathartic for her, and for the rest of us. It is very emotional, even now, for me to listen to those songs that she loved so much. Sometimes it brings back the pain of that period, but more often it brings back the joy of the many (but still not enough) good years we had. That hard period was also undoubtedly what pushed me to, never again, allow my 'career' and other tangibles to get in the way of me playing music. Music damned near killed my scientific/engineering career at times. But somehow I just never let anybody convince me that "there wasn't time" to pursue my musical passions. This stuff is very powerful.

And that is a great version of Always Something There (To Remind Me). Thanks for sharing that.

HI Mike,
Nice rendition of a classic, and cool tones on your steel. I hope the song brings you some peace during this time.

Mike -

Great job on a classic tune......Although it may have been difficult to play due to the present troubling situation.

'curious if you could somehow allow you Mom to hear your recording?
It might bring a smile to her face - and yours too as you watch her reaction.

Great song Mike, brings back memories for me and hopefully with your mom. Someone just gave me a great box set of Bacharach what a genius!

Hope you are well my friend!
Regards, Craig
