11 String single neck guitars

Post by Andrew Frost »

Did ZB make a lot of these ?
I understand companies like Excel and now hopefully Shoji will be making these to custom specs.
But I see them only occasionally come up for sale. Interested in any info on 11 strings. old or new.
Thanks
Andy

In the 13 years I worked at Excel, we had one 11-string order and one used repair order.

I would like to accept orders for 11-string in the future.
However, I think the price will be quite high due to the redesign of steel guitar and more custom parts per unit.

I think it is possible to make a 11-string without raising the price by using a 12-string neck, cabinet, etc. as much as possible.

Thank you
Toshiyuki

I guess that the one order was this one currently for sale on the forum. viewtopic.php?t=406878

Williams, Fessenden and BMI have built 11 string pedal steels, most likely a custom order.

My 76' RusLer is an 11 string steel with 5+4. I bought it new and sought of followed Tom Brumleys idea for an 11 string. It served me very well for 27 years.

This is the only photos we had of the 11-string that came in for repair. I wish I had taken more photos.

How are 11 string players tuning it? I've seen both adding a low E to a regular 10 string E9, and also getting rid of the D string and using EG#B for the three lowest strings.

I tune mine to straight E-9th tuning with an octave low E for the eleventh string.

I've had a number of 11-string ZB's.
A double-11, a D10-11, an SD-11 and my current S-11.
The SD-11 was probably my favorite, but the S-11 weighs less and takes up less room.
My first was the D10-11, which was set up with E-G#-B on the bottom (with no D) and that sold me on the 11 string thing.

Thanks for the relies.
I've been tuning 10 string E9 to a mini universal for a few years now on both S10 and D10. Bottom is G#/B/E ...on upwards. Its a great tuning, with the 'missing' D on a lever.

I've experimented with a low E instead of G# on string 10 which is also good, but ideally would like to have both, without going to S12.

I appreciate the info here.
