Weird tremolo sound

Post by Neal Vosberg »

I’ve spent the last week trying to get my old GFI Expo in better shape in hopes to offer it in a trade. First, I had to try and address some serious tuning instability of the open strings. Oiling the rollers (Against GFI’s advisement) and being extra meticulous in installing strings has made it better. However, now all open strings sound like they’re running through a tremolo pedal set at a high rate. To be clear, this isn’t metal on metal sitar-like buzz, nor is it the beats between various frequencies. It happens on all strings but most noticeable on the plain ones. Is this a common issue at all? I’ve run through several different amps and the results are the same.

By any chance, do you have a ceiling fan running?

Just a thought, but my hearing aids make my steel sound like it has a stereo chorus. I have to take them off when I play.

I'm going to third the ceiling fan suggestion, although I'd be surprised if you had a fan running in these temps!

Run in the fan reverse to bring the hot air under the ceiling down to floor level

I thought the fans always spin the other way down there in the southern hemisphere
