KOT my name came up!

Post by Karen Sarkisian »

I put my name on the waitlist for an Analog Man King of Tone pedal many years ago, and my name came up! Got an email saying i could order. TBH i had completely forgotton about it I put my name on the list so long ago. I ordered one and expecting to get it next week. Ordered red side (right) with xtra gain which was what was suggested. anyone using one of these please chime in!

Congratulations Karen! The KOT really shines when you set the Red side set for overdrive or distortion, and the Yellow side for clean boost. I like it best with both sides on together; when both sides are on, the Yellow volume knob controls the final output level. For steel, I'd run it on 18V DC instead of 9V DC, to avoid unwanted clipping, since steel pickups are hotter than guitar pickups.

I have made a couple of clones of that pedal, one using sourced components that Analogman doesn’t even use anymore due to scarcity. Without a doubt the best overdrive pedal I have ever heard. It just has that something.

My KOT is now permanent on my pedal board. By the time I got one I had forgotten about it too.

The KOT (King of Tone) is a dual OD/Dist pedal.
There are other alternatives to this type of thing.

For starters, you can stack pedals.
That allows you to use different OD/Dist pedals.
I currently use three on my set up, and they are all different.
After experimenting I set them up in a particular order to give what I wanted in terms of tone.
The gain on them is barely cracked open, so kicking them on in a particular order just adds gain/dist, and does not increase the volume. Sort of like having a three channel amp (four if you count none of them being on and running clean).
The other bonus of doing it this way is that you can buy them used, which usually means cheaper.
Also, depending on the date of manufacture and components used, you can also mod them if you're into that.

Then there are also clones, which often have the side benefit of being much cheaper.
There are tons of clones made overseas.
So many that there are actually clones of clones.
This is true for the KOT as well as just about anything else.
Here is a video from a couple of years ago comparing several dual function pedals from Caline.

I believe that DemonFx makes a KOT clone.

How to find a clone of the pedal you're looking for?
Here's a web site.
I don't know how up to date they are.

JHS pedals has done videos on clones in the past.

Based on the prices on Reverb, KOT pedals really hold their value, or even make for a good investment! Looks like prices range from a low of $825 up to $1,300 or more!
blah, blah, blah.
