Hi Sam,

I had to do something with the Anapeg … no use in having pretty furniture . Mind you it took about 10 takes as I kept on flubbing before the end. These tunes are rather hard if you haven’t played them at least a few times on the bandstand.

I just played the melody but, for this tune, I had a few melodic ideas for the AAB impro with the B section a bit of a challenge and I managed to work something out after a while.

I got into steel guitar to learn more about chord soloing and voice leading because I thought it might help my guitar playing. It hasn't because now I just want to play steel all the time.

I think the Zane Beck E13 is such an amazing tuning and has a ton of potential for adventurous steel players. Would love to hear more!

I have watched a bunch of videos on your channel, and it is filled with treasures! I especially love the 2 solo recordings. Just listened to the Zane Back interview a few days ago. That is such an important historical document, along with the Julian Tharpe interview, not to mention the Jack Richards stuff. These are such important people in the development of the instrument, and particularly the E13 (D13) tuning. They seem to be pretty under appreciated, or just unknown compared to the other steel guitar giants. In a recent thread about pedal steel jazz players, Zane Beck was'nt even mentioned!

At some point I want to try an E13 tuning since all my favorite players seem to use it. Trying to resist until I get a bit further with my own copedant.

When I made Ethan Shaw aware of him he immediately recognised Jack as a steel guitar giant and featured him on his show Raising the Bar on SteelRadio.org. Yes Zane Beck is so underrated as a player. When I spent over 3 months with him in late ‘78 he showed me a lot of amazing things you can get on his tuning which is why I adopted it rather than Jack’s tuning which comes from an E6th base becoming E13th with a pedal change.

I don't know why, but I am really drawn to these older players, older styles. Probably the same reason I love 30's and 40's blues, jazz and country. There just seems to be something missing in "modern" music, musicians. Thanks again!

As someone who believes E C# B G# F# D B G# might just be the best all around non pedal tuning, every time I see Zane's copedent I get excited.
I just might have to get a guitar with that one of these days...

So glad you liked my interpretation of the tune. I will post further pieces this coming year. We live near the Sydney International Airport and so you have to record between plane takeoffs . It’s quite a pleasant revelation to me that players like yourself appreciate the artistry of my friend Jack Richards. I have an extensive interview with him which I will post at some stage for those that are interested.
