Hi all,
Pretty new here. I am thrilled to have recently purchased a 1948 National Dynamic. It’s definitely been well played and it has all the original electronics, pickup, bridge, nut, tuners. Sounds wonderful, plays wonderful. I currently have it in E with GHS 13 lap steel strings.
However, I am noticing that the 3rd string, the G#, is really buzzy compared to the 2nd and 4th. Has anyone encountered this? It’s possible it’s a nut issue (I just ordered a new Tusq) or maybe the bridge having some micro grooves? I’d be open to gently filing the bridge to smooth out all the grooves that strings have worn over the years, but don’t want to mess anything up. Anyone have any advice?

A squirrely sounding third string is a common complaint on short, 22.5", scale guitars. It is gauged in a range that could be either wound or plain. Most sets will have a plain third string which is usually preferred on longer scale guitars. On short scale guitars I find that I need to replace the plain third with a wound string to sound right. You still might need to clean up the saddle, but I would try a different string first.
