I also posted in the builders section, thinking there might not be too many looks there.

Everybody has seen the metal “channel” placed over the nut to allow lap style playing on a conventional guitar. I need the same thing to fit a Fender Jazz Bass. I would get a tall nut, but the current one is very short and the fretboard channel is so narrow I think the leverage of string tension would likely break it out of the fretboard.

Clever ideas? Anyone want to get paid to build me one?

I think a piece of solid aluminum rod would probably work. Depending on how high you want the strings to be above the frets, 3/8 or 1/2 inch rod. Cut it to length. Put in string slots with a file. Remove the existing nut and put the rod right on the nut slot ... string tension will hold it in place. I was going to suggest using a bolt, no need to cut string slots, but the threads of the bolt will likely chew up the nut slot.
