Pedal Steel Jazz Trio EP

Post by Nick Larimore »

Just wanted to share this project with you all, it’s a pedal steel, bass and drum trio EP recorded live earlier this year in Nashville, TN. There’s some Coltrane, Lonnie Liston Smith, Tom Waits, and an original on the record. Streaming and bandcamp links below for anyone interested!

Congratulations on your release. Great playing throughout. I enjoyed the whole thing! As a huge Lonnie Liston Smith fan, your version of Astral Travelling was icing on the cake.

Wow, this is fantastic! Great choice of tunes, especially loving how you've managed to capture Naima, that's no small task. I saw in an Insta comment that you played all this in C#9? Is that just standard E9 transposed down by three like it sounds, or is there some extra witchcraft going on with the changes? And what inspired you to use that tuning? At any rate the effect is phenomenal.

Thanks for listening!

The tuning is for the most part just E9 (I play a Williams S10, so the Williams 3x5 E9 copedent) transposed down a minor third with some heavier gauge strings to keep the right tension.

I modified LKV to lower string 10 a whole step and raise string 7 a whole step to give a root position maj 7 chord across the bottom 5 strings, I also tune string 9 down a half step and raise it with RKR as opposed to the lever being a lower. I remember having to change the string 6 lower on LKL to accommodate a wound string too.

That’s pretty much it without getting too far in the weeds, I’ve had this setup for a little over a year now and it’s been working for me!
