How wide is your pedal steel ?

Hi Folks,

Can you help me ?

I am have designed a music stand/pedal holder that mounts to my Excel S10. I would like to design a system that could for any sized PSG. If anyone has the time, can you tell me:

1) The spacing between the front legs from the outside of one leg to the outside of the other.
2) The diameter of your legs
3) The Make and type of your PSG.(e.g. Emmons SD10, Williams D10)

I plan to make these available for the group for very affordable price(Well under $100).

This picture is just a work in progress of just the music stand. I plan to make a version for pedals, add a light, and make it compact and lightweight when broken down for easy mobility.

I plan to make the panels out of various materials...exotic hardwood plywood, tortoise shell acrylic, ...

It looks like a handy accessory for the psg. I could use one... And am looking forward to it's availability.

An item for your consideration -

If possible, it would be great if your design of the piece holding the sheet music would fit inside the case for the steel.

Then easy to transport to rehearsals, recording sessions, etc.

Maybe a good idea / or not!

Good idea Ron!

In my next version of this model, I plan to redesign the sections of the music stand, so some could be standing up and some could be laying down depending on whether or not you want music up or pedals down or what have you maybe just a beer or something Also, I wanna make the sections’ widths smaller so the shipping is lower as well as making it easier to pack. I don’t want to make the panels be 35 inches long, rather smaller sections that are easier to deal with.

I have also been thinking about making specifically a single row effects pedal holder that is lower profile, maybe four or 5 inches tall. I don’t think somebody’s going to want a tall music stand in front of them while they’re performing, right ? But, they may want their their effects pedals right in front of them so they can tweak the knobs in the middle of their performance.

I have been thinking about a music shelf, To fit my guitars. Problem is my steels are 3 different lengths.
I have a GFI S12U keyless that is 30 1/4", Outside to outside of legs. 7/8" leg diameter.
I have a GFI keyed S12U, And now a Mullen S12U just moved in from Maine. (Sorry in cases now.)

I have been thinking about using a 24" long X 11 1/2" tall paper shelf, On a 1 1/2"X3/4" strip of wood long as the Mullen body. Make the leg brackets with a socket to hold the 1 1/2" X 3/4" wood strip at proper angle. Could be moved from 1 guitar to the other.

The shelf would have to have some sort of adjustment so 1 shelf fits all steels. From a short keyless, To a MSA Classic with 12 string key heads.

Flat sections for drinks on stage would be dangerous, Bass player and Lead player would be wanting to use it too. Rum and Coke is rust looking for a place to happen.

I started with affixing the shelf to the front apron of the guitar. For my Excel, that was not a solid solution given the way it's made. Too much flex. For wood sided bodies, it could be better.

I want a generic solution that could work across different pedal steels regardless of length, construction, ... So I will make telescoping fittings that will take up the slack variance between different pedal steels. I will probably make a keyed and keyless head model. So probably a cross member that is 31-35"(keyed) and another at 24-28"(keyless). The music stand section will be the same but the side panels will vary between keyed and keyless models.

Hi Paul,

What you might do is have leg clamps that can slide back and forth to accommodate different leg widths. For example, have a 3/8" hole (3/8" high, but 3 to 4" long) that the leg clamp is adjusted and tightened to fit the size needed.
