Please help! Nut screws for Stringmaster

Post by Alex Cattaneo »

While we’re on the subject of screws… This is the last piece that’s missing for my restauration project. The nut screws on the Quad I acquired are stripped out and worn, so looking to replace them. These are very small (size #3?) and I couldn’t find any in my local hardware stores. Looked on McMaster-Carr as well but no luck yet.

The original ones are 3/4 long.

Alex,

How many do you need?

Not sure if there is a Home Depot near you but they *say* that they have them:

I ordered a pack just to see if they really are a #3.

Also,

A metric wood screw M2.5 x 20mm should fit:

Thanks Tony! These are countersunk, which I thought wouldn't work because the original screws aren't. But I just had a look at the nut themselves, and they have a countersunk hole. I assumed the holes were counterbored because of the screws themselves.

I do have a Home Depot but it seems that Canada doesn't have any #3 screws, like they are illegal or something, hahaha!

Great, thanks! I was more concerned about making sure that everything is snug with no vibrations.

So, I really want to avoid ordering these from China.

This is what my local store says: not in stock, at least a month wait time, minimum order 100 pieces. I need 8! I guess they have to order them... from China?

Maybe check Grainger Canada:

https://www.grainger.ca/en/category/woo ... crews+wood

If there's a local branch you can even do pickup and save the shipping cost.

Hi David,

Grainger Canada don't have them either. Couldn't find them online, so I spoke to someone there who confirmed they don't have #3 wood screws.

And a lutherie store in Canada (BC) that sells a variety of #3 wood screws:

Just ordered from Philly, the Canadian website didn't have the right length.

Thanks David!

I received a pack of #3 x 3/4" screws from Home Depot. They fit the Stringmaster nut.

They are flat head Phillips not oval head.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-3- ... /204587389

$1.38 per bag of 8 screws.
