Hipshot Doubleshot on an Asher Lap Steel

Post by Gary S. Lynch »

Picked up a beautiful Koa top Asher and
I want to install a hipshot double shot on it. Was looking for any feedback if someone has done a similar install.
Looks like I need to install a Telecaster version...
Or is there another type of hipshot doubleshot bridge that works better for a lap steel?
Appreciate any input/photos on the process or guitar photo.
Thanks,
Gary

I put a dobro style unit on an Asher and it worked well. I changed to locking tuners, which I think is essential to keeping it in tune. You can change tuning in the middle of a solo and it’s spot on!

That is exactly the kind of bridge on the Asher I’m getting.
That looks like a hipshot/ double shot made by the company with same name also,.correct? Looks like their label.
And you used the Telecaster Model hipshot?

By Dobro style nut, I think you are referring to a roller nut? .. used on Dobro set ups?
I assumed locking tuners were best.
Thanks for sharing.
This is very helpful moving forward.

NO on the Tele version! Not only that - do they even make the Tele version anymore? I just went to the website, and I can’t find it on there. Like Kevin has, the dobro version works equally well on lap steel. Photo is a couple years old that I saved from the website.

After using them on dobros, this was the first lap steel Jerry Douglas had with the DoubleShot, a Lap King custom made to accommodate the device. Unlike the Asher, this model doesn’t normally have enough room on the tail so Jason Dumont created an extended version for Jerry.

Something to be aware of - if you have a hardshell case for the Asher, there might not be enough room on top to be able to close the case. I know that’s the situation with installing it on a dobro where a special case is required, don’t know if it’s the same for a lap steel.

I wrote dobro style UNIT as opposed to Tele style. Not “nut”.
A Hipshot roller nut is a good thing to install, however. It makes the operation pretty much foolproof.

Thanks, Kevin!
I appreciate the additional confirmation that it was the Dobro style unit.

Kevin, forgot to ask.
Did it fit in the Asher hardshell case after the install or do you use a gigbag?

I never had a hardshell case, just a gig bag.
