YouTube blocking AdBlocker

Post by Brint Hannay »

Today, for the first time, YouTube blocked me from watching any videos, with a message saying ad blockers violate YT's terms of service. I had never heard of this before today. I watch YouTubes all the time! So okay, I disabled my ad blocker. Still blocked from viewing. Removed the ad blocker extension (Firefox). Still blocked. Installed "Disable JavaScript" extension (recommended on some websites). Still blocked. Is my only access to YouTube to pay $13.99 a month for YouTube Premium?? Aargh!!!

What browser, operating system? You should be able to see ad supported YouTube without issues.

Yep.. YouTube & Instagram I know are getting rigid. This will be a trend on all, ad supported platforms.

Windows 11, using Firefox. I don't understand still being blocked even after removing the ad blocker.

A puzzler. If you have access to another browser I'd try it. If you get access, I'd disable Firefox extensions one at a time in hopes of discovering an offender.

Also check the Firefox privacy settings.

Not trying to defend YouTube, but they are in business to make money. Free is never free. Ads pay for infrastructure, employees, copyright and royalties, and who knows what else. Netflix has gone to a multi-tier add no add format. Amazon took away most of the control for their free streaming audio and they will be raising Prime prices to cover streaming video and music. Spotify free not only has adds, but the streams are mono and highly compressed. Bandwidth costs money. Either we pay for better quality and no adds, or put up with the adds.

I use Adblock Plus and got this notice a couple of times on my desktop then Adblock plus updated and all was well.

I do not get ads on You Tube when I use my desktop now. I DO get ads on You Tube when using Android (both phone & tablet).

When watching on Android, I just wait until the ads time out and I continue watching. They are usually fairly short.

I use uBlock Origin extentsion with Chrome.
Keeps Youtube ad-free and also other sites clean! Best combo is uBlock Origin and Firefox.
