Absolutely my favorite of the modern rockabilly singers. There are, of course, notable exceptions - but IMO, a lot of modern rockabilly is more about attitude than music. Robert really brought the genuine goods - he had a great voice and used it to amazing effect. And he worked with some of the greatest guitar players in the genre - Link Wray, Chris Spedding, Danny Gatton, and more, who all got just how much Robert was the real deal.

My rockabilly/surf band opened for Link Wray in the 90s, and I did some guitar tech work on his main stick. We got a chance to talk quite a bit. When the subject of Robert Gordon came up, he was effusive in his praise.

I was really hoping I'd get a chance to see him again when he announced he was touring not long ago, but it was not meant to be. RIP, Robert.

Saw him at the Whisky in the '70's. Real deal Rockabilly...

He was a real singer with an amazing vocal range. And of course, the attitude. Saw him once with Link Wray and once with Chris Spedding. I didn't know Gatton was also on his list of on-call guys, but it makes a lot of sense. He had a respect for the genre that gave it a long needed breath of fresh air and some genuine pop cred. A great artist. RIP

Interestingly enough, Dave. Berkeley Square is where I saw RG with Chris Spedding in ‘79, maybe ‘80. He sure had an ear for great guitar players. I will definitely be on the lookout for that album. I have all of Danny Gatton’s studio stuff. It just kills me every time I listen to those recordings, and makes me sad a little too.
