Blue Moon - Gmaj9#11 tuning

Blue Moon - Gma9#11 tuning (low to high) G, B, D, F#, A, C#

I usually avoid trying most new tunings as I've developed a core set of them that works for me but I was intrigued to try the Gmaj9 tuning that a few players have posted about: G, B, D, F#, A, D. It's basically a compound tuning of D over G. I dropped the first string 1/2 step to C#. You could name this tuning a few ways but Gmaj9#11 makes sense to me.

So, I started playing around with this tuning only yesterday and Blue Moon came out. I had to find the music to recall the bridge. It just seemed to want to be in the key of B - a key I seldom play in. This is a kinda rough - especially my reverse slants at fret 1 - but you can get some idea of the sounds in this tuning.

Beautiful! Love the extra sweet chordal tones you get with that tuning.

Also.....good to hear you play.....not just MIDI Volk!!

I like that you took an unusual tuning, made it even more unusual... and then pulled something wonderful out of it. Nicely done.

Thanks, guys! Jim, yeah, I actually do play steel. But if I had to learn, woodshed and record to my satisfaction all the arrangements I do I’d be 175 when I finished.
