Who repairs Altec speakers?

Post by Tommy Boswell »

Looking for recommendations for where to send an Altec 418H speaker for repair or reconing. Who does a good job with that?

If you're handy, have a place and time to Do it Yourself, this company offers a drop in re-cone kit for it.

I've not done one, but the instructions make it appear to be a relatively simple DIY project by following a few key instructions.

Great Plains Audio in Oklahoma is a speaker service facility owned and operated by ex Altec employees and apparently have the right parts for your speaker.

dont recone this with just any run of the mill recone kit. it will sound awful. find someplace that either has original parts or some parts that are good enough copies.

From my research, GPA has the original Altec tooling that they use to make the recone kits. They have really good reviews but their kits cost about $120 compared to the $65 for the generic kits.

Part of the process for an Alnico mag speaker is reconditioning the magnet, as I understand it. Otherwise I might try a recone kit.

I didn't mention them in this thread  but yes they are pretty easy especially with qualified help! (Thanks Ross!!)

But I don't see that 418H listed on the website

The GPA site has a notice saying their phone and internet service may get repaired by May 15...the note indicates it was posted 10 months ago.
