Lloyd Green ShoBud at TSGA

Post by Paul King »

Lloyd Green played 2 sets at the Texas show this past weekend. He also joined in with JayDee Maness on another set. Lloyd played a 1973 Shobud if I remember correctly. He also stated the last pulls added were the F Lever back in the 60's if I am right. Someone correct me on the dates if I have it wrong. His steel sounded so good through the mains and just like what you heard on the records. He playing was top notch and he told stories about the sessions and how theses songs came about. All in all, he has a unique setup with an awesome tone. Sure happy I was able to attend this year again and see this man play. Lloyd was overwhelmed with how well he was received and he appreciated it. Hopefully he can come back and play again.

Paul,

Your facts on Lloyd's guitar are spot on. When I was an engineer in the early 70's in Nashville, I had the pleasure of doing many sessions with Lloyd. I wasn't that much into steel those days (sad to say) but his musical genius bowled me over everytime I worked with him.

He is also a terrific person; modest, down to earth, and very nice to talk to. The last time I did talk to him before the show we discussed tone and the Twin vs the Telonic. He thinks and I agree with him that his tone gets better with each passing year. In the old days the trend was to be a brighter and his tone in those days reflects that. However no matter what the tone quality was, there is absolutely no way to not distinguish the totally distinct playing style that he has.

We were appreciative that he came down and Russ told me that he is already working on him to return next year. Keep your fingers crossed!!!

Mark,
So, what did he say regarding the twin vs the Telonic?
Curious minds want to know. :D

Hi Erv,

Lloyd told me that the Telonic seems to project better in a live gig situation. Not to mention the big difference in weight as well. He feels that the "beeming" effect of the Telonic amp is wider than the Twin. However, when it comes to a controlled situation such as a studio setup, the Twin is still his amp of choice.

The way Lloyd was received and treated I bet he will be back soon. It was an honor for the TSGA to have him play for our organization. It was history in the making by a living legend.

Paul, here is a pic of Lloyd from 1971, in the studio where Mark worked - Nugget Studios, Goodlettsville. The bottom has the edge of a double exposure but end of the Sho Bud is clearly visible & the pad where the C6th neck had been.

The guitar in this image was Lloyd's Sho-Bud Baldwin guitar, the guitar from which he had the C6 neck removed. It is not the Sho-Bud LDG that Lloyd received in 1973.

It looked black to me from a distance. Definitely not the bright green he has one one of his albums.

Mark it was good to see you again, and to meet Lloyd for the first time... I was bowled away at how gracious he was and sincerely interested in what this hack had to say... Speaks loudly to his character... And though I’d never heard him live before, I was astounded at how incredible he sounded... I thought he was Studio quality all the way.

Paul it was great seeing you again too, and meet your lovely wife... wish more time could be spent with everyone, but did you see just how many people were there?... Do you have any idea what the attendance was?

Lloyd was the first to have the E to F pedal. I suppose it should be known as the Green Pedal.

The Green Pedal is a good idea Johnny. Dale, I estimated close to 800 or more for each set Lloyd played.

I thought the attendance was up from last year. Trying to find a spot in the parking lot was tougher this year than last for sure!!

Even if the attendance were to be the same from last year, it doesn't make a difference. There was a very positive buzz about the show this year and I feel that Lloyd's presence had a huge part of that.

Lloyd Green

Post by Don Mogle »

I had the opportunity to meet Lloyd in Dallas this year. What a great guy and talent!

I took the opportunity to get some pictures of his guitar. One day, I hope to purchase one like this (or a Pro II of the same vintage). I looked under the guitar expecting to see some two-hole pullers with brass barrels, but that was not the case. Looks like this guitar has nylon tuners.

OK...here are the pictures.

I knew Lloyd didn't lower his 4th string a half tone but by the looks of the end plate, it also looks like the 9th string doesn't move either...interesting!
I thought Nashville was the roughest, but I know I’ve said the same about them all.

Lloyd stated the last pull on his guitar was the F lever which he come up with. That was in the late 60's if I remember correctly.

Just noticed the fretboard. It has 26 frets. The old style of that vintage, which had a gloss to them, were 24 frets. Sho-Bud started production of 26 frets with the dustbuster, in 1974, shortly after this gtr was made.
Such a unique steel... longer scale & shorter gumbys.
Sho-Buds are like baseball... if you watch long enough, you'll eventually see everything.

A longer fretboard doesn't necessarily mean a longer scale.

I know, Erv. Sho-Bud made tons of steels with 24" scale and 26 fret boards.
Lloyd's steel does have a longer scale, though.

What you see right now with Lloyd's original LDG is some upgrades that happened very early; like within the first several months of him having it since May 1973. No you will not see Barrel tuning; or 24" scale or I can call out a handful more things; but the main thing is Lloyd's LDG is incomparable to any other LDG. My LDG was the first regular first production one sent out; so that is one that will mark the comparison to changes through the years.
BTW; here is Lloyd's E9 set up I did on his 1966 "Lightening Bolt" Fingertip Sho~Bud; which is his exact E9 set up on his LDG forever. The reason he has the E's to F on the Left knee going Right(LKR); is that was the only place there was NOT a knee lever on his Fingertip when he came up and wanted that change; so that's where it went and Lloyd played it and has always played it that way.
