Johnny, I can't even listen to a country radio station any more, due to it sounding like country rap which is crap. I subscribe to Sirius radio now just to enjoy real country songs with plenty of steel.
I have seen some of these bands with utility players, and not a full time steel player, and they are a little weak on their steel playing.

country
I don't listen to top forty country at all
just not what I call country and steel and fiddle are pushed out
I think this is partly due to LA folks coming to Nashville and changing country to what it is today
which is a very sad state
yes I see a lot of bands using utility players
instead of steel player I guess you gotta work
so you play more instruments.....
some folks say change is good but is it?
in this case I say no

On the west coast I see more country-rock and alternative-rock bands with pedal steel than country bands. It could be because I don't follow country, but even casual music-viewing appears to get that result.
No chops, but great tone

C&W has always been behind pop music. It isn't "California" anything, it's what young folks want to hear. Steel still thrives in so-called alt. country, "Americana," and other rootsier band types.
Right now, Rap is infiltrating C&W at a good clip. I'll stick with the genres mentioned above. I'm not much into the Nashville/Branson sound... YMMV...

Phase out
Yes, the steel is being phased out of popular radio country. But not only steel, but lead, fiddle, piano or any other lead instrument. I can't tell you the last time I heard a good signature lick intro on the radio. 15 years ago, DIVORCE, Borrowed Angel, Mama Tried.....now you get Pontoon!

What's even worse you can't even get your friends and family to listen to traditional country music anymore. I've even had a huge churche where Jesus is suppose to be Lord and the pastor told me steel guitars was not of God and therefore they did not employ steel guitars. I left scratching my head thinking I sure have heard a lot of nice Christian music played on a steel guitar for it not to be of God. On the other hand I know another pastor that leaves his pedal steel sitting right beside his pulpit. That's the church where we had the late Walter Haynes funeral and we played steel guitar music for the service. They even played a recording that I played the steel on. I think traditional country music has fallen into the ranks of Bluegrass, Blues, Western Swing, Jazz, etc. There will always be a cult following but it will never dominate the airwaves again.

I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee. ` ~ Psalm 144:9I've even had a huge churche where Jesus is suppose to be Lord and the pastor told me steel guitars was not of God and therefore they did not employ steel guitars.

steel guitar
my Church asks me to come and play steel anytime I want
if the folks at that Church think steel is not of God
and don't want it they need to through the piano
out also as
it was a honky tonk instrument long before steel was.....
just my thoughts mike
