MSA---New Studio Pro, SD-10, 3 x 5---Jet Black

Post by Carl Williams »

Here's my new MSA Studio Pro. I'd like to thank the MSA folks, Kyle Bennett, Mitchell Smithey, and last but certainly not least, Sonny Bennett. Thank each of you for your skills and dedication to building such a fine steel guitar...the wait was well worth it! Carl

White Knight ---- Black Knight

Post by Carl Williams »

Well Darvin, great minds think alike...I'll show my "great mind/wife" your grand "White Knight"...Thanks for posting it for us all to see. I know you've been an MSA owner for years and can certainly understand your loyalty to the brand. As I mentioned above, I had 25 yrs of MSA and happy to start my 26th year with this new steel. Thanks, Carl

My sincere thanks Malcolm and Christopher. As MSA owners, you both know how great these machines are. I'm sure you'll agree that they are the easiest steels to adjust and get the exact fit/feel you want. What a pleasure to play this magnificent instrument! Thanks again Gentlemen, Carl

Wound 6th or plain? While I don't have a rodding chart I can offer ideas. What have you got currently
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

I'd use the following as a starting point: middle hole on the lowering scissor for all three, the bottom hole (farthest from the axle) on the bellcrank for 5 and 10,and the next hole in for 6
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

Because the 10th string is probably a 12¹ (core gauge determines the pull response²), you might have better luck with the tenth going one hole higher on the changer.

¹typically they try to keep wrapped and core sizes close to the same. The core is usually close to a third of the total size of the string, since the wrap will be counted twice, once on the left, once on the right. To get to 38, you can either use a 12 core and a 13 wrap, a 10 core and a 14 wrap, or a 14 core and a 12 wrap other variations are possible, but silly.

²that's why a wound 6th is so weird, a third of 22 is going to be either a 7 or 8, the easiest way to get 22 is a core of 8 and a wrap of 7. Someone making strings specifically for the pedal steel might choose a core of 10, but a wrap of 6 is going to be QUITE fine. I may call Sid and bend his ear tomorrow.
