all EMAIL servers are not equal

Post by Tony Prior »

just a heads-up, even though our Internet provider or EMAIL provider allows us to receive and attach files of fairly large size, don't assume that if we attach 8 or 10 megs to an outgoing email being sent to another that they are going to receive it. It may very well not even make their SPAM folder. NOT all EMAIL servers are equal .

I have recently sent some larger files to clients , 8 or 10 meg , which actually are not that big and they are sitting somewhere out there in the Ozone layer. Good thing it was just a couple of MP3's and not the Nuclear code.

The internet is really great and so is Email...

until it's not !

SOmetimes it's simpler to create a Dropbox, or Box, or other cloud account and upload files to it. Then provide URLs to your (trusted) clients to retrieve them. That's the basis of the Microsoft Cloud and Google Docs.

yes of course file transfer "sites" are indeed easier, for those who know how to use them. And I do.

We cannot assume that everyone knows how to use them or even wants to. Internet/ email users are comprised of folks from ZERO ability and knowledge to people who can write books on it.

I can and will host an FTP site for some of my clients, to me it's easy as pie, to others not so easy. Certainly when LARGE files are involved, this is what I do.

the topic is more of just a heads-up.

I can generally send clients items over one or two emails with ZERO issues and they love the simplicity. But there are a few servers out there that don't like certain attached files.

My whole point is, don't assume all mail servers are equal .
