Bossa Nova tunes you play on steel ? put it out there

Post by Larry Lenhart »

I enjoy listening to Doug Jernigan play "One Note Samba" and Jim Loessberg playing "Wave" (others as well of course), as well anyone playing "Girl from Ipanema". This subject was brought up a few days ago but drifted into the genre itself, and I am interested in it on the steel guitar. Just curious what other bosa nova type songs you guys play on the steel. I have enjoyed playing Jobim's music for 40 years on the guitar, nylon string, but also on the electric jazz guitar...sounds good on a jazz box as well...actually to my ears, even better.
Seems like those songs beg to be played on the C6th pedal steel, but I am sure they can be played on E9th and sound great too. If you have a youtube or mp3 of you playing one, please post it !
For bosa nova in general there is a netflix streaming video called "This is Bosa Nova"-worth checking out.
Thanks in advance.

Menina Flor (yeah, Jack!), Samba de Orfeu, Black Orpheus, If You Never Come to Me, Recado Bossa Nova (as a tango), Inovidable (bolero), and often Body and Soul as a Bossa, plus more I'm not thinking of, right now

Good tunes guys...I will have to check out Menina Flor...I am not familiar with that one. Many tunes can be played in the bossa nova rhyhtm style...Watch What Happens is a great one !
Anyone have any mp3s of you playing them that you would share with us...that would be interesting I think.

I first encountered Menina Flor in my alter-life as a jazz pianist back in the 70's. It's a jem!

Águas de Março. I've had the bossa bug for a while now*, and that's one I would regard as a classic.

I have recorded Desafinado and Manha de Carnaval (Black Orpheus). I also play Recorda Me (perhaps more of a samba?).

Bossa nova is so cool you don't even have to play it. In fact, the less playing you do the better.

Mike Perlowin plays Manha de Carnaval. Waters of March is beautiful, a cycle of chords that keeps coming down like water.
I just checked out Stan Getz and Luis Bonfa, with Maria Toledo, doing Menina de Flor. Great changes.
Bossa nova isn't dead, it just gets few requests.

I happened to turn on the TV last night to an early '70's 'Columbo' and heard the ubiquitous bossa nova background music.
It was everywhere for a brief while.

Menina Flor

Post by Christopher Woitach »

Ok, I'll go first...

Menina Flor - it turned out that it was useful, as I hadn't listened to the original in a long time, and was playing some incorrect changes, so thank you for this thread!

The volume on it wasnt as loud as I would like it...is that my computer or was it recorded low ? BTW I have enjoyed your video on "What is this Thing" and "Things WE did Last Summer"---marvelous playing...I will have to look for more ! Whoa great guitar playing too !
Thanks for posting !

Watch What Happens and Ipanema. I have Medications  worked out but haven't gotten the nerve to do it on a show yet.

I have been working on the Nora Jones song "Don't Know Why" in a bossa feel for a couple of months. I can't decide if C or Eb is the better key. Suggestions?

Hey Bill

Unless you're planning on using open strings in C6, Eb gives you lots of fret room, which is always easier for me, personally

If you're doing it on the E9 neck, no idea
