Julian Tharpe pic in Winnie's book

Post by Ricky Littleton »

The picture in Winnie's book of Julian Tharp shows him playing a Sho-Bud and I think it's a 14. DId Sho-Bud make a 14 for Julian or am I just mis-counting the tuner screws?

JT also had one with a double pedal rack(second row on top and stagered back like on an organ), it was a 14 string, don't remember the name, but he used all the strings, and pedals. It was a very mesmerizing experience just to watch him play. If memory serves correctly, he was playing for Barbra Mandrell.

Here is a picture of Julian's 14 string Sho-Bud and also a picture of his 14 string Sierra 10x6. To say that Julian knew how to use all those pedals and all 14 strings would be putting it mildly. On his Jet Age Album he plays Danny Boy without using his bar, I am told.

I can't tell, but how many KL's did JT have? Were there clusters?

The pic was taken by me at Scotty's in 1974. It was a very custom made guitar. The end plates had a strange angle on them to hold the legs.

I have the twin sister 14 string to that Sho-bud.
Under the E in that picture from the "Jet Age" album is the name "Julian".
Mine has the name Barbara in the same area.
I understand that it was built for Barbara Mandrell back when Julian was in her band.
It is a real beauty.
FYI_Bobby Black replaced Julian in her band and Winnie's book shows Barbara behind Bobby's Sho-bud.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by David Phillips on 18 January 2005 at 12:55 AM.]</p></FONT>

I took the pic of the "Jet Age" album cover,at Johnny Cash's recording studio. If you'll notice on the posted pic, this was the "re-issue" version of the pic. The original version ommited the pedal rods & steel seat, when they superimposed that damn "psychedelic" airplane in the background. Someone mentioned their error to them,& it was correctly re-issued. I have a copy of the original, but not of the "re-issue".

Smiley, since you took the picture of the Jet Age Album, were you there in the studio when Julian cut this album? If so, can you enlighten us any as to Julian's approach to recording these tunes? I always liked his playing but never knew very much about him. Do you have any stories you can share about Julian?

The yellow Wright Custom guitar in David's post is the one I saw Julian playing in January 1973 at the Palomino Club in Los Angeles. I was just starting out on steel but I think I knew that not everybody had 14 strings and 21 pedals. He said it was his first gig with that axe, having added the 1st 2 strings (G,E, on F6 tuning).

Roger,
When I got there, the session was just about over. I grabbed a group of pics, just before Julian packed,as he was in a hurry to get goin','cause he was gettin' ready to leave town on a gig. As soon as I took the pics,I also left. I still have the master pics (slides) from the shoot. There were 12 pics taken. The label picked 2 of them,& used the one posted. I still have 10 left,w/ a couple of similar poses,as on the album cover. These pics have never been seen before, since I own them. Maybe, one day,I'll get them transferred to prints,& post them.(after I get them "copyrighted",of course.)
