What's in your pedal steel seat?
I am new to pedal steel and this forum. As I acquire equipment, I have to justify the cost of a seat to my wife. Please write or show pictures of what you keep in your pedal steel seat that make this a worthwhile purchase. Thank you.
If this post exists already, I apologize.

Most importantly your seat will be the correct height (all the time) ...and then it will hold everything you need, volume pedal, tuner, leads, strings, spare bar, wire cutters, your lunch and three cans of beer ! :-}

Main box: volume pedal, vocal mic, Izzy Plus, Buzz Tone/Buzz Boost, Dunlop reso pedal, the power supplies for those two, about three more cables than I need, Peterson phone adapter, an old prescription bottle with my thumb/fingerpicks.
Sidekick box: a mess of bars, a mess of strings, three tuning wrenches.
Biggest thing: a comfortable seat at the right height (standard chairs are 3-5 inches too short.

Re: What's in your pedal steel seat?
A few months ago I saw a really cool graphic of a decision making algorithm one should use to determine if you need to buy a new guitar. It started off with "how many pairs of shoes does your wife have?Christopher Miller wrote:I have to justify the cost of a seat to my wife.
1 to 5 ... she's lying
6 to 10 ...
you get the idea!

In your seat is virtually everything you need to do your gig...not to mention being a stable platform to sit on.
Lesson learned here... I had my seat stolen a bunch of years ago. Discovered it was gone while getting into my car on the way to a gig. Talk about a nightmare... Everything I needed was in there, including a bunch of spare parts I'd rummaged from the 3rd floor of Sho-Bud on Lower Broad. The contents were worth nothing to anyone who would want to steal it, but absolutely valuable to me.
It would have been way easier for me if they had grabbed my steel, instead...
But I digress...
It's a valuable asset... just get one, and get one with a backrest.

Hi Chris, I have a couple of seats, one here in Florida and another in Tennessee. Here's one with the bare essentials that I haven't yet unpacked. In no particular order, there's a Goodrich 120 volume pedal, 3 ft. & 10 ft. georgeL cables, an original Maxon AD80 analog delay w/power supply, 7/8" BJS bar & BJS pouch, JF fingerpicks, Golden Gate thumb picks, Peterson StroboPlus tuner, a pen light given to me by Ken Fox that comes in handy whenever searching for a particular string while on a darkened stage, georgeL wire cutters & cable checker, a string winder and several sets of Live Steel Strings including many singles and a New Testament given to me by Billy Cooper.

Get the seat, junk it up with the stuff mentioned here...... but put a piece of jewelry in there. Show it to the wife and say "look what I found in this box" That should be all the justification you need.

Hi Larry, I'm never organized
. There's also a georgeL screwdriver in there somewhere, probably underneath the BJS pouch. My other seat is a sidekick model and it's stuffed full, practically 2 of everything. In all seriousness though, I always check my guitars thoroughly before taking them out to play and have never had a need to carry many tools with me
.

The Seat for a Weight Lifter.
Since '99, I've carried an old Sho-Bud seat with a backrest made from the hinges of a knee brace. I believe the seat was built in the '60's and it is sturdy, packed full, and weighs in at 40lbs. With an Emmons vol. pedal, tool pouch (old bank bag), tuner, extra strgs, flash light, Goodrich Matchbox, (2) BJS bars, picks, Carbon Copy delay, (2) Boss Fender Reverb pedals for guitar and steel on bouncy stages, several lengths of Geo. L's cords, clip on reading light for dark stages, clip on mounts for the tuner, delay, and bar holder, batts., a small flip top box with string, steel feet, fuses, nylon nuts, C-clips, and more picks. Then in separate cases in my van, I have a box of tubes, an Anvil briefcase with mics. and cords, and a small case with (2) Emmons vol. pedals. Those Reverb pedals and the reading lights are the most useful extras that I carry around.

By the weight of it, feels like to much. Volume pedal, tuner, resonator pedal, power supplies for all, plenty of strings, picks, cables, couple for tuning wrenches, tools, small extension cord and instrument as well as vocal mic. Digital delay stays with the amp and I carry a passive VP just in case.

I resisted the pack a seat for a long time. It just seemed like an over priced accessory. I used everything: drum throne, keyboard bench, chairs, stools. Inevitably, screws fall out, or something breaks, had one fall apart on stage and there I was, on the floor in front of a room full of people. Embarrassing. Was at Billy Cooper's steel shop a few months ago and he talked me into buying a Walker and I'm so glad he did. Sure, the storage ability is convenient, but it's the height, width, and comfort that makes these things so valuable. They're simply perfect for pedal steel. The legs don't interfere with volume pedal placement and they're cozy.
