What is up with Buck Trent?

Post by Lefty »

I know he is not a PSG player, but uses the electric banjo for PSG effects.
This post concerns his appearance on the Marty Stuart show.
Twice Marty held his hand out to shake Buck's hand, and Mr. Showboat did nothing.
Growing up in the South I was taught many rules.
Always day "Yes Sir" etc. to elders.
Always return a handshake or it is seen as an insult.
I apologize if this post is in-appropriate for the forum. I feel the need to vent.
You can only watch a grinning showboat for so long.

Chris,
It did not seem to be humor. If so I have never seen two more straight faces.

I know a guy who never shakes hands. He's a germ freak. He won't touch a doorknob unless absolutely necessary. When I met him, I extended my hand and he said "I don't shake hands, Doug".

John Hartford would never shake hands, he was always concerned that the bones in his hand would be damaged by an overzealous fan.

Lefty, I agree with you completely. I at first thought that he did not see Marty's extended hand but he did it twice and I felt he did see Marty's extended hand the second time. I thought it was just me so glad you have posted it. He most definitely overplayed backup on Connie's song. But he has always been the smiling showboat and overbearing banjo picker ever. He never stops picking!! J.R. Rose

I backed up Buck Trent twice and he was a hand shakin', back slappin' son of a gun, but that was 30 years ago.

I met Buck at a show at RFD , and he was the most friendly person going. Been to his shows a few times now at different locations and they are great . At his Branson show he personally greets and shakes hands with every person that comes in and will talk as long as we wanted . He was great and a great performer.

I assure you as someone that has worked for Buck, that he would not have purposely not shake Marty's hand. Knowing Buck the way I know Buck, it would've been an oversight. Buck is 78 years old and gets sidetracked at times. I didn't see the Marty Stuart show so I didn't see what Buck did or didn't do, but I can attest to the true character of Buck Trent and I can name the names of those that can attest to it too including Marty Stuart.

I failed to read Karol's reply but it is exactly right. Buck takes greeting people very seriously. I don't know why Buck didn't shake hands but it was by far not typical Buck. Buck is very genuine and very well respected.

When I played with him he shook everybody's hand.
Seemed like a nice old guy to me. He's hell-fire on that banjo too.

I remember the show from 2009. His version of Flint Hill Special made me want to never pickup my banjo again..... That would probably be a good thing.

He shook hands hands when he first took the stage and at the end of the show. Unless he was on another episode I didn't catch anything unusual.

Picks?

Post by Jack Goodson »

If I am playing steel guitar and ready to play I will use my left hand if possible. Shaking hands will cause the picks to fall off....thanks jack

Can someone please watch this and indicate to me the part where Buck refused to shake Marty's hand? I certainly can't find it.

Buck and Marty are great friends and Buck is one of the nicest people I've ever met. If you don't dig him that's fine, not everyone does but that's no reason to try to find something that isn't there and then run a good man down.

I'm disappointed in Marty for wanting to shake someone's hand who plays one of those strung up snare drum abominations.

The OP's thesis simply isn't true. Just look at 3:36 - definitely shaking hands.

Beyond all that, their body language is of great affection and respect. I've watched this show many times, I'm a big Buck Trent fan. I never saw anything with either him or Marty to indicate anything but absolute respect for each other. As it should be.

Edited to add - Kevin and I apparently posted at the same time.
