Post by Dennis Smith »

I'm watching the new Pawn Stars an a kid just walked in with his grandfathers guitar he found in the basement A 52 Tere and wants $13000. asking price.
They gave him the $13000. It had 1-25-52 in the neck pocket. Then he sold it for $30,000.

A quick $17,000. Kid should have walked after he got all the info from there guitar guy. He let Cory sell him on the quick cash. A little work and he could have got the 30k for his trouble.

I understand business. But do you think he's was still happy after watching him sell it to the same guy who told him what it was worth. One life lesson charge $17,000.

how about the guy who just sold a couple of tinplate pictures to a picker for $2. turns out one of them just might be the only other pic of billy the kid. appraised at $5 million. who knows if it will bring that at auction...but it will be a whole lot more than $2.

There was the guy who found the medal for $.75 at a yard saleand sold it to Rick for a 10k and Rick got $30,000. or something like thet. That's the reward for knowing more than the seller about what he's selling. I bought a box of juke box EP's for $.50 each and sold them for $175. each took a month made $17,450. But they gave him free info and he didn't use it to his advantage. Yes he was happy with what he got but with a little more effort he could got more. That's all I was saying. Hell he should have keep it and learn how to play.

^^^ That. And then it might have turned into "Somebody else can think about selling it after I'm dead."

My uncle Lee Roy loaned me a arch top Kay in 1963. He showed me g, c & d. I gave it back to him latter after I swaped my daisy bb gun for a arch top silvertone. Wish I had uncle Lee Roy's Kay.

Before you guys get too upset... keep in mind that this show, like all reality shows, is scripted, set-up, and the young man who brought the guitar in is probably an actor. Yes, the guitar is real, but the situation and the transaction are phony IMO. I'll bet there was no grandfather, no sale for $13,000 and no sale for $30,000. The whole thing was planned in advance for the cameras and the 52 tele was brought in to play a part in the production IMO. Do you think The History Channel filmed at the store for six months and just happened to capture this transaction on film?

American Pickers is also a scripted show. People with collections of old stuff have to submit pictures of the items to an office in NY and the producers of the show screen the submissions and decide where the "pickers" will go. The pickers know what is on the property before they go there, and the producers even arrange some of the items before the filming takes place. It's show biz, it's just TV folks.

It was definitely a case of insider trading. Opportunity....

Most if not all of that show (all) is staged and rehearsed. 13K was a low ball for that guitar and even 30 looked pretty good.

Call them flippers if you want to, but to them or anyone who buys and sells anything for a living, it is doing business as usual. When you go to OutBack Steakhouse do you call them flippers because they sell the beef for many times the original costs? How long do you think they owned the beef before they sell it and does that make a difference.

It was only insider trading if there was actually a sale. I think the whole thing was fake, even the $30,000 check at the end was fake. All staged for the show. Just my opinion. ;-)

You're right, pretty much everything is staged for the show just like most every other show on TV.

I would like to see the Antiques Roadshow do complete shows of just the musical instruments that come in each city.

Yes, Antiques Roadshow is real reality TV. To attend an event you need to apply for tickets. 3000 are chosen at random (2 tickets each, 6000 total) for each city. As far as I know, applicants are not asked what they will be bringing to the show. There is no mention of that in the application rules on line. So the show doesn't know what will be coming in. Real is always better, more exciting.

Many HGTV shows are fake as well. The idea of keep it or move type show usually involves someone having their house remodeled and then building the show into something more tense by having the homeowners "looking" at other houses. the others houses are often relatives homes and they are not really looking, just generating addition fake plot for the scripted show with a fake agonizing decisions. Google reviews of these shows and see input from actual show participants of how the entire show is scripted including the keywords I want: "open concept". "stainless steel appliances", "granite countertops" etc.

So all these shows including the musical instrument sales, are often scripted. How else would all these "dealers' have all this expertise and comments in their short term memory and look like an expert when someone "happens" to walk in off the street with a vintage guitar?

"Storage Wars" is another one. One of the regulars on the show was fired a couple of years ago for 'outing' the show for the phony storage units they setup. He claimed that "nearly every aspect of the series is faked." These shows are fun to watch, but so is a James Bond movie. That's not real either.

Storage Wars gave themselves away by cutting off brand new shiny locks on every unit. Especially the unit that "hadn't been open in 15 years"

52 TELE JUST WALKED IN TO pAWN sTARS
A walking guitar oughta be worth 13K easy. Just think what it would bring if it could talk.
