sho bud till stage one is done?

Post by Bob Hardy »

hello,
I am a newbie here and want to learn to play the pedal steel. I am a guitar player (hack) and love the sound of the steel, and if you ask me, they are pieces of art. I looked at a sho bud ldg yesterday, and when the guy turned it over it looked new - I know i am not a builder or whatever, and the guitar was probably a 9.5 on the guitar and that dark dark green looks awesome. I think I can get it for 2K, do you think I would have any trouble selling it when the stage one arrives in january?? thanks very much, Bob

Why get the Stage One if you can have an LDG?

ps, on a more practical note, an original ldg will have the same copedant as a stage one.

If the LDG is in solid mechanical shape, there'd be no reason to consummate the purchase of the Stage One (and I'm sure Doug wouldn't mind, he's got quite the waitlist).
Get an experienced player to evaluate the Bud, though.
Remember that's a roughly forty year old machine.
2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects

Do a search here in the classifieds to see what LDG's have been selling for....maybe eBay too...ugh!

Depending on condition, vintage etc. perhaps you can determine worth and how long it will take to sell at the price you set.

Happy picking and good luck whatever you decide to do.

I posted a ad on which guitar to buy for a newbie, and the stage one was by far the most recommended... wish I knew someone who could check this thing out but I don't know anybody who could do that..

stage one vs ldg

Post by Dave O'Brien »

I'd rather have a Stage One , in fact I'm currently playing mine every night professionally, leaving all my heavy guitars at home. It's amazing how good it sounds and plays and never needs adjusting, repairing, etc.

Fellow newbie, here also waiting on Doug for my first. My uninformed gut says wait it out.

I wouldn't ever purchase a vintage PSG without having someone qualified look it over and try it out. Even if it looks good, from what I've read here it wouldn't take much for your 2k investment to turn out to be worth alot less and/or require alot more in repairs. The good news is that there may well be someone local on the forum who can help you out.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

waiting...

Post by Dave O'Brien »

Bob, maybe you could pick up a Maverick or MSA Red Baron while u wait, might be easier to sell when you get the Stage One.

I don't know where you are in Washington, but there are a bazillion players from Seattle down to Portland that I believe would go with you to check it out.
Carter D10 8p/7k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup, Regal RD40 Dobro (D tuning), Recording King Professional Dobro (G tuning), NV400, NV112, Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open G slide and regular G tuning guitar) .

Playing for 55 years and still counting.

I'm in Graham, WA and there are a couple other players close by you. John McClung lives down in Rochester and knows plenty about steels, playing, mechanics, etc. He knows way more than I do and I'd suggest you contact him via the forum PM and see if he can assist you.

Holy crap...........I had no idea there were so many steel players in my area.
I live in the Tenino area and have seen only 3 guitars for sale in shops.
I couldn't even find anyone to take lessons from and I searched for months.
Closest place is Tacoma and that's 50 miles away.
However, my problem may be from the fact that I am a beginner on lap steel so that makes me a bit of an oddball here.
Well, everywhere mostly............
I have stuff.
I try to make music with it.
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn't.
But I keep on trying.
