Jazz info.
I was told years ago by A guitar player on a top tv show at the time that jazz can be any song only not playing the melody.Quentin Hickey wrote:Can someone please giveme a definition of "jazz" music??
When I was a kid learning fiddle when we didn't play the melody every one called it hokem. We even called a jazz tune hokem. Tracy

Wow this discussion has some awesome conversation and has taken a few different directions.
I asked my peers and my bro in law and his friends to name a few Jazz artists they like and other than names that they saw on a t shirt or record store in London. Most struggle to even come up with 5.
However there is a huge amount of DJ's that sample jazz music and use musicians hard work all the time and that group tend to know more about Jazz. Especially if they steal a lot. Example Many hip hop, broken beat, Afro jazz DJ's know and listen to music from loads of Jazz artists. One can possibly even say it's through their new application a whole new audience is introduced to Jazz. Only problem is if they don't credit the source the audience will never know. Thus to an extent remain largely uneducated.

I really like the sampling, being into artists like Kid Koala and Mr. Scruff, Amon Tobin, etc. There are a few hiphop artists who have really succeeded in this, especially Guru with Jazzmatazz and also Aceyalone, and many others. I frequently hear the sampled parts when I'm listening to old Bebop records, but a lot of the 60s Jazz was sampled, too.

Yeah there are some great DJ's who credit Jazz artists but in Europe majority don't. And those that do it's hard to find.
Just as a point towards educating the masses about Jazz.
So this also affects the awareness and prevalence still of Jazz music even in clubs.

That's the way I see Jazz although ordinary music is wonderful too. I've heard Jazz as if one is playing his instrument and floating down a river. The player or singer has to get out of the river but also has to know when it's time to get back in.Donny Hinson wrote:I see jazz simply as what you get when you (finally) go beyond ordinary music. However, it seems most players and listeners never travel that far.
