And it definitely sounds like Pete. He is one of the few steel guitar greats that I didn't like. It hurts my ears when I hear him.

nice emmonsy tone though, whoever the pretty boy with the big collar is.
Here's a different song from about the same timeframe, with Hank on a black Emmons. To this admittedly non-expert, the right hand technique between the clip in the OP, and Hank on this song, appear quite different. Steel starts about 1:48, and again on the outro at 3:27.
Storm, if Emory was in the Hot Band then, he would have been playing bass. Guitar would've most likely been James Burton, Albert Lee, or later on, Frank Reckard.
My bad Skip,I thought Emory played six string with them at one time..oh well ..what were we talkin about /...DOH!! b. 25 December 1944, Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Gordy was first noted as the bass player for Elvis Presley’s 70s band. At the same time he was playing with Gram Parsons and after Parsons’ death, he became a member of Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band. He was a session musician on many country rock albums, notably by Eric Andersen, the Bellamy Brothers, Jonathan Edwards, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris Hillman, Albert Lee, Lyle Lovett, Mickey Newbury and Ricky Skaggs. He also played on several Billy Joel albums. When Gordy turned to record production, he had four US country number 1s with Earl Thomas Conley - ‘What She Is (Is A Woman In Love)’, ‘We Believe In Happy Endings’ (a duet with Emmylou Harris), ‘What’d I Say’ and ‘Love Out Loud’. He also produced the Bellamy Brothers including ‘Old Hippie’ and ‘Kids Of The Baby Boom’. In the mid-90s he re-established Alabama as a major chart act. Gordy is married to Patty Loveless and, naturally, produces her records. He also plays part-time with the country supergroup the Notorious Cherry Bombs. Pretty much what you said Skip.
Wow, thanks for all the replies. It's like Mama said... "youtube is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get."
It's not Pete Kleinow in the video, seems more likely that it's Hank Devito. There is a short cameo of Emmylou singing, so it makes sense, but what do I know. That's why I asked.
Ollie, I wonder if Emmylou and Linda being on Dolly's TV show led to their Trio collaboration?
Richard, thanks for posting the liner notes from the LP. Man, what a treasure trove of talent on that album!
Chris, I was never big on wide lapels, and I generally don't think a guy wearing embroidery and sequins is cool, but once in a while, it's AWESOME!
Heheee...
This thread is like the classic broken telephone game
Dan, it could well have been a start of the Trio project, there are clips from this show of them doing stuff as a trio, too.

Yeah, I was satisfied it is Joe McGuffee about twenty posts back. For those who aren't, look here: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopi ... 20#2018720. Same discussion from three years ago, not Hank DeVito, not Sneaky Pete.
That was little Joe McGuffey from Enterprise,La.,showed me my first steel guitar playing forty years ago,in that shot he was with Dolly Partons band...p/s he lives in Branson,retired...CM
Use it up,wear it out, make it do,or do without.....

Yeah Pete always dressed like that when he was playing an MSA D-10... looks just like him. Not.

My points that I don't recall Pete ever playing anything but his beater Fender. And whoever the mystery picker is plays a much more legato style than Pete plus the guitar has that typical dark sound of an MSA. I don't see any connection at all to SPK; guy is obviously someone else even if Pete played on the studio recording.
Re-read everything and show me where I said the player in the video or that photo was Pete.

I take some blame for bringing up the recording in the first few posts. The ? was about the video rather. Sorry for turning the thread south.
I was sure it wasn't Pete on the video...I also didn't think it was Hank D. Never heard him play with that kind of tone and execution, no offense to Hank.
Not to throw Skip under the bus, but I just went with his analysis since he knows way more players than me. He later said he was mistaken. A lot of us were, so no big deal there.
Anyhow, anybody that's ever followed Pete's career knows his style is instantly recognizable. Noboby sounds like Pete but Pete.
So Dan's question was answered numerous posts ago and confirmed by Joe McGuffee himself in one of the links here somewhere.
