I have 3:
  1. Desert Rose S-8, my main guitar for gigs and recording
  2. Carter D-10, for teaching and sometimes recording E9th
  3. Sierra Olympic S-12, currently set up for experimental Bohlen-Pierce music
I do need one more.

Impeccable logic, and exactly why I'll be looking for my second guitar this year...

I'm doing my first gigs soon, so if that takes off I shall need one set up and one packed. So further logic says three...

Is this where the slippery slope begins? :)

I replaced the Williams D-12 Crossover with the Desert Rose S-8 when I realized that I had 3 times as many strings as I needed. Reduced redundancy and cut the weight in half, too.

3, which is 3 too many for the way I play. For years I only had one (BMI SD10). Then I started playing out and needed a second one to leave on the bus (Zum D10). I had always wanted a p/p so when I got the chance I got D10 P/P from Herbie Wallace and set up by Bobby Bowman (God rest their souls). Bass is my principal instrument so don't play steel much anymore. But they are set up in my music room so when the notion hits me!

I knew that you were farther along, but I hear that you're simply far out.

Six, but one is unplayable...an old Marlen which I tore down to rebuild decades ago, and then realized it probably wasn't worth rebuilding. Sometimes, junkers are really junk, so that one will probably wind up in the landfill.

Over the last few years I've thinnned the herd a little. At one time I had 13 p/p Emmons alone. Now I'm down to just 4 p/p's. I feel naked! :whoa:

Is there really such a thing as too many??
Yes!

Why? I don't understand the NEED for so many Pedal Steel Guitars.

If someone is that fortunate & blessed, to own a ton of steels...consider donating 1 to someone who is down on their luck. Or offer it for a REDUCED price. Just sayin!
I'm VERY happy to say, I finally own a Pedal Steel Guitar, once again. It was torture, not having one...when I couldn't afford one, for much too long of a time period. It really makes you REALLY appreciate, EVERYTHING you own!

Seriously not trying to stir anything up. I saw your postรขโ‚ฌยฆ& had to post my reply.

Btw....I'm NEVER going through that AGAIN, EVER!!
I don't know the other guy's reasons to have more than one, DJ, but I can tell you mine. I have the two S-10s so I can leave one set up, in my music room, and one packed away in the case, to play out with. If I only had one, I'd have to--Take it apart--put it in the case, get to the gig, and take it out of the case, put it together, play, take it apart--put it in the case, get home, and if I wanted to practice (which I do a lot)--take it out of the case, put it together---you get the picture--that's two tear-downs, and two assembles, enough to convince this old timer that it's too much trouble to practice. At my age, I don't have enough time left in my life to be skipping practice! The U-12, I got for $1000 from a friend, who was going to go UNI from a double neck, and chickened out. If I get good enough on B6th, I'll probably get rid of the S-10s, and get another U-12---or maybe I'll keep all four of them----Bwaaahaaaaaaahaaa  You see, DJ, its kind of a mental illness! All of us PSG people, desperately need help! :whoa: -Jake- (PS) I got them all used, and have $4000in all three. If I had bought a new one, I would probably have to settle for only one.

James, I hear you loud and clear. Somebody should design a steel that sets itself up when you open the case, legs, pedal bar, rods.....
