Sony Laptop hesitates before executing commands

Post by winston »

This Sony laptop is running win 7, it has 4g of ram and 500G hard drive. Anytime you click on anything it hesitates for 5-10 seconds before it executes any command. When typing one or two letters will show and then it hesitates 5-10 seconds then goes on working normal. I have done all the usual things like run hitman pro, malwarebytes, microsoft security essentials. I have done the chkdsk/r, ran windows update for latest updates. Nothing has helped so far. The computer works but this hesitation is #$%^&^&*

Too many applications (programs) running can cause this.

Although not directly related, run the Resplendence Latency Mon program. It will probably point to what is causing the problem.

Still no luck Jack. The laptop has Audicity installed but not running. The laptop is more powerful than my recording computer and I can record 8 or more tracks at once with no problems. I can't imagine Audicity recording only one track would cause this. If all else fails I will just have to reinstall windows. thanks for the help Jack.

Did you run the Latency Mon program? and if you did what did it tell you? If you didn't run it, you need to do that.

You can have a super PC but still have system/latency problems. I see this all the time on other forums.

What Windows 7 do you have? 32 bit or 64 bit version. With only 4GB of RAM you should be running the 32 bit version. The main advantage of the 64 bit version is that it will address more than 4GB of RAM. In addition, the 64 bit takes up more resident memory than the 32 bit, thus leaving you less memory for programs.

The Latency Mon suspects a device driver, but that printout doesn't point to which one. Did this PC come with Windows 7 or is this an older PC that was upgraded to Win 7? Some older hardware can have problems with Windows 7. Wi-Fi is another known potential to cause problems and as its a laptop, I assume you are using Wi-Fi.

Jack, it is a 64 bit system, the computer is about 2 years old and came with the 4G ram. The program says the ndis 6.2 driver seems to have a problem. I have updated the BIOS. When the computer needs to be online the WIFI is used. The laptop is used only for church stuff. thanks again Jack

Well, the 64 bit OS and only 4GB of RAM could be an issue, depending on what is running.

Latency Mon overloads you with information, but somewhere in that is the key to the main problem.

Doing a google search for NDIS 6.2 latency brings up a lot of info. Much of it refers to memory, either defective or insufficient memory.

Did this always have this problem or has it developed later. If later, along with memory, programs installed could be a cause. AdAware is one that was mentioned as causing one users problem.

Jack, there is no AdWare installed in the machine. I think it is related to sound somehow. As a last resort I am going to restore it back and if that doesn't work I will probably reinstall windows. I think the machine had a virus one time and when it was removed the program may have taken something out that it should not have. I thought a backup program was running in the background but that's not it either. I appreciate your efforts Jack.

A "clean" reinstall (reformat the hard drive then install Windows) will probably do the trick. Its a hassle reinstalling but sometimes its needed.

If you have the option of 32 bit or 64 bit OS when you install, install the 32 bit version.

Winston, I'm glad to hear you solved the latency problems, albeit via a reinstall of Windows. I would be careful about which and how many Internet related programs you add now, especially if this is your recording computer. Use another laptop or tablet for browsing, messaging, social networking, etc. if you can.

If you are done here I will close this topic.
