I smoked from the time I was 18 until, I turned 21. I quit cold turkey and, was smoke free for 20 years when, I started back again. I wish I could do it again and this time stay off of them.

Charlie, Sandy Denny was a heavy drinker and smoker, her friends were very worried. I'm another fan!

The photo reminds me of how young she was, and turned out an incredible number of songs.

I'm still not sure, Joachim, that our concerns are not misplaced.
If something doesn't get me, something else will,
but I'm not anticipating either.
(Now back to how did I forget I smoked?)

I started when I was 15,,,smoked 35-40 years,,,quit cold turkey. Been a non-smoker for 20-25 years now. I've helped many people stop (who WANTED) to,,,including Bobby Bowman,,,(he made the choice to start again,,,unfortunately). It's harder to quit the 2nd,,,and 3rd time. Just do it once,,,then "lock it up!!!" If anyone "WANTS" to quit,,(forget the pharmaceutical gimmicks),,,I can help,,,,email or PM. I takes every "trick" and "tool" in your bag,,,including facing some TRUTHS that I won't post here in consideration of the "smokers" feelings.

I don't know, Sonny, I think this would be an excellent place to post your thoughts and methods.
It's the beauty of a public forum.
I mean, just because I'm going to have to pull every trick out of my tool bag
doesn't mean I'm not interested.
Shoot.

Hi all. I quit smoking cold turkey 44 years ago. It might have been easier for me because I only smoked for a little less than two years. I started using chewing tobacco and have been chewing now for 44 years. My doctor says quit, I tell him I don't want to. I like Charlies statement, if something doesn't get me, something else will. I am now 70 and have C O P D. My point is this. What you breath in your work environment also has a lot to do with your health. Asbestos particles from brake shoe dust and pipe insulation, Welding fumes, grain dust, silica dust, etc. I don't mean to hijack thread but, there is a lot more stuff in the air that we breath that is just as bad or worse than cigaret smoke. I will probably get flamed for saying that and I mean no disrespect. I hope that anyone that wants to quit can do so. Jr.

I absolutely agree about the air, it's not that clean.
Still, every little bit less makes it easier to take what's already there.

I remember going through the "cop outs",,,,There is not a doubt in my mind,,,based on the way I felt then,,,and the way I feel now,,,,,if I hadn't quit,,,,I DEFINITELY wouldn't be here having this conversation,,,,(or going over to see my grandkids this afternoon). But hey,,,,to each his own,,,,my post was to someone who WANTS to quit.

Gave up in September 1996 with the help of nicotine patches = the smartest thing I've ever done!

The dumbest = starting smoking in the first place :\

Very good luck to all who try.
Keep trying, you WILL succeed at some point. 8)

I started smoking when I was 13. In 1986 I was at a party at a friends place for a party. On the way home I reached in my pocket realized I had let my cigarettes there. I thought I was going to quit anyway. After 28 years I had quit, and I haven't missed it for a second.

It should be mentioned that tobacco is thge only product that when used as directed, leads to death and disease.

Hi Craig

Post by David Hartley »

I don't want to smoke anymore but just can't give up.
I've tried most things.

I've been puffing them since I was 13, so I've been doing it for 43 years.

Years ago, a cigarette would sometime be lodged in the tuning peg strings while I took lead breaks, and John Stannard too always done this. He stopped recently in Texas last year but if he hadn't, he would probably be dead now. Yould think that would make me alter my ways.......

But I can't...

Bye, I'm getting up now (06:20am) for a cuppa tea and a fag.. (As we call it over here)..

Smoking was always marketed as 'what the cool people do'... what other angle did tobacco corporations really have?...that is what is being bought...that is how it was sold.

A very deep thinking ex smoker friend of mine told me his biggest issue in quitting was getting past the social identity problem. He only found success through hypnosis.

Getting past social identy issues is one of the biggest personal growth or acceptance difficulties people in all walks of life have.

I smoked on and off for 30 years. I quit once for ten then started up again. I finally quit ten years ago Feb.5 and I don't miss it. in fact I can't hardly stand to be around someone that smokes or is smoking.

I smoked from My early teens until My mid forties,
I tried several times to stop and eventually went for one session of hypnosis which was very light indeed,I remembered everything that was said during the "trance" I even doubted if I was under!
Upon returning home after the session I said to My Wife that I was a NON smoker which is a phrase I had never used before, In the past I had always informed everyone that I was TRYING to quit.
That was the secret (I think)Being positive and really wanting to stop,If You Try to stop You will always be trying but if You can say You are a non smoker and mean it then You will be a non smoker.
I craved for a long time but,as has been said before, the hours turned to days and so on.
Good luck to any new non smokers.

After smoking a pack a day for 20+ years! I have been smoke free since August, so that's almost 5 months now. And I don't want to go back. I feel and smell so much better now. I used the gum to curb cravings, but it was finding out I have an irregular heartbeat that goes cranky after stimulants like nicotine and caffeine that made me quit. That and I realized I had been getting a lot of colds that I attributed to smoking. You just don't know how the darn things are affecting you until they start making you sick. My wife just began vaping yesterday in an attempt to quit and I hope she can stick with it. I know the jury's out on vaping, but it can't be worse than smoking. Good luck and just quit. You can do it!!

Your friend is a deep-thinker indeed, and I'll have to dig deep on what you said.

It should be but it's not--mentioned, that is.

An old tuner in Tulsa (carried an ashtray in his bag, I think) said when he was a boy
his doctor recommended cigarettes as a way to dry his sinuses.
(Remember 'Take your sinuses to Arizona'?)
Go figure.

Oh My Sweet Jesus, Thank you all for chiming in here to help build up the confidence needed. I had no idea what I was in for !

My brain went through a tremendous amount of anger yesterday , an all day nightmare took place, I felt drunk, lost in direction, halucinations galore, All trust in family members disolved, no pitty , no compassion, time slowed down to no speed at all, 12 hours seemed likened to 5 days, for some reason jealousy even entered, I was going against my own will by not lighting up ,

Only One whisper would bring me out of it every time.

"DONT LISTEN TO YOUR BRAIN"

God Bless You'all and Thank You very much
Day 2 here we go...

Craig,,,you have to literally "talk yourself" OUT of smoking!!!!,,,for a few days,,,a week,,,,two weeks,,,,soon it will be over. Think of EVERY reason you can to NOT smoke,,,,exaggerate if you have to (what you may think is an exaggeration MAY be closer to the truth than you think).

This link shows what smoking does to your lungs (Warning: these pictures are very disturbing.)

As far as I'm concerned, the people who run the tobacco companies are nothing more than drug-dealing murderers. The fact that what they do is legal does not let them off the hook morally.

"The guy that used to be "IN",,,is now the stinking weirdo. Look around you,,,is it your heros that are smoking,,,or the creeps,,,and thugs,,,and????"

Boy, talk about your generalizations!!! I (non-smoker or drinker) know numerous people who smoke but they are certainly not "weirdos", "creeps" or "thugs", as I am sure the smokers on this Forum are none of those either!

And what Mike said about tobacco execs could also apply to booze execs and now to the new and upcoming execs of the growing marijuana craze.
